Stray Kitten

There's a few strays after moving into my back garden, but one, a kitten, has a severly messed up eye. I'm going to try trap her tonight to take her to the blue cross, but the strays are completely wild. They'll come within 8 feet of you but that's it. Also, mammy is very protective of the kitten.
I'm just worried that if I catch her, she'll be very upset, the strays will be upset, and then if I'm given any cream etc for her eye that once the kitten gets back out they'll just vamoosh, because they'll think I'm a baddie?

If you are not in a position to keep the kitten inside, then if I were you I'd try to find a local rescue group that might take it in. You are right, once you release it, there is no way you'll get near it again.

The eye problem could be cat flu - which will require a course of antibiotics. The kittens will also to be treated for worms, ticks, fleas, etc. And the mother needs to be caught and neutered if possible.

You are great to be taking the initiative like this! Hopefully you'll be able to find a group that can help you.

How old is the kitten? If she's young enough she could be socialised - in which case you could either do so yourself, or hand her over to a rescue.

I do fostering for an animal charity, and recently got a litter of feral kittens who were young enough to adjust. They're currently living in my bedroom, and are very friendly by this stage. I'll be able to find them permament homes in a few more weeks.

You should also see if a rescue group in the area are doing a spay/neuter and release program for the adult cats. They probably can't be socialised, but that will stop them from producing more and more kittens. Ireland has such a huge overpopulation problem with stray/feral cats :(

Did you have any luck catching the kitten?

No, the little fecker avoided my garden after 3pm. How do they always know?!
In response to the other posts, its not a particularly young kitten, I reckon 8 months, although she is very small for her age. They're very well fed (some have gone off cat food and will only eat chicken fillets) and one of my neighbours allows them sleep in their shed.
Anywho, I'll try catch her and take her to Tallaght on Thursday. I can't afford to get her looked at out of my own pocket sadly.
