You can stick in a summit of Howth on your way out and back.

      Folks,

I live in Rush, and was wondering what time you would think the group would pass through here at. Would you say 9am would be a good guess

It looks from the map that Rush is near the end. If you zoom in you can see the km markers.

I'll do it on the fixie if we can get a few crazies to form a posse. We'd have to stay away from the main bunch but a fixie century* would could be fun.

Calling all hipsters! Calling all hipsters! What say you?

      *imperial, that is.

I'll just point out that the route is not as flat Robfowl is letting on. There is a significant uphill out of Skerries to Loughshinny and a bit of a drag coming out of Balbriggan. There are some hills around Naul also, so I'll wager that we are going over one of them.

It goes over the "3 sisters" at four knocks which is fairly benign, forgot about the one out of Skerries its tough enough especially as there are 85-90 miles in the legs at that stage. Usually there are 3 groups a front group which goes steady (17mph ish) til Drogheda then starts to speed up, a touring group which average 14mph all the way and after Drogheda there's a "bail out" group who go straight back to Swords.
Never seen anyone do it on a fixie.
Not entirely sure would want one in front or behind me either  a few too many faceplants in the past

On the day, no pre reg usually about 100+ controled pace and different groups. No one gets left behind.

OK, I'm about as ignorant of the northside as niceonetom and Raam are of the southside - can anyone recommend a good route from the city centre to the start of this ride?

I can meet you before we cross the border rottenhat, strength in numbers!

Also, tempted by the fixie idea (well, singlespeed for me). Would be good preparation for wicklow 200.

I am up for that as well! Should we meet somewhere on n11?

Good times- if we get mugged you can fight them off while I go for help. I notice you're keeping schtumm about whether you know how to get there though.

I can't believe that the man who spent Sunday lecturing me about how there had been progress in bicycles since the 1970s, and perhaps I should experiment with the new-fangled technology, is proposing doing this on a fixed gear.

The only fight move I know is the foetal position. How about we both run for help and see who can get away first. Natural selection and all that.

We could probably just ask some sporty looking gentlemen in tracksuits for directions, chances are they would know where a cycling club is.

@Astra: Yeah, meet on N11 sounds good. You going fixie as well?

I don't have one (yet..!) If the new one is ready i ll be out with this, otherwise with the beone.

I might be in for this. I was planning on doing wimpy metric centuries in Wicklow on Sat and Mon, but maybe a flattish 160km would be better (mental) preparation for the big one.

I'm visiting the parentals, so unlikely I'll be out

+1 for meeting on the southside, and it looks easy enough to get to.

      (famous last words....)

Will be cycling to starting point from city centre also so up for tagging along. There a meeting point before cycling out? N11? where's that?

There is the start??! Its already 27 kms away from my house :D That would be ... a... devastating ride! :D

Now you know how the northsiders feel on rides that start from Dundrum.

Would be worse than Tara? I did 70km to the hill of Tara a while back on fixie, it was ok ...

There are no climbs but a few drags like the one up to the hill of Tara. So just think that spin x 2.5.

The clue was in the question, eh? Thanks Raam.

Southsiders, how does meeting at 7:30, departing 7:45 sharp, from the junction of Waterloo Road and Baggot Street sound?

    • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,724 ✭✭✭kennyb3

would i be absolutely mental to attempt this having done only 2 x 20km cycles, both were at about 26kmph, what sort of speeds would the slower groups be doing for this?

    • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

Has anyone else noticed something odd with the map. It makes sense till about 140km, where the route arrives back in Swords, but then it goes off up to the middle of nowhere near Gormanstown?
