This seems to be a very common theory at the moment. What does everyone think?

Could be, but then who the hell is Christian? Bah, typical lost. I wouldn't be surprised if they left all the answers to the very last episode and at the last scene they had Locke turn and say "Nah, it's all a load of bollocks.".

Well the fact that when Ben summoned him and Unlocke was there he didn't appear but as soon as he disappeared out comes Smokey highly suggests there is some connection going on.

I read an interesting theory on lostpedia that Eko was supposed to be the vessel for "esau" but he failed the judgement. It also explains why Eko said to Locke you're next. I thought there was sense to it.

I think Un-Locke's the smoke monster and I think in hindsight Christian was also. Before Sun and Frank met Christian the sounds of the smoke monster could be heard nearby and Christian then instructed them to wait for John Locke (who was actually Un-Locke) as he'd know what to do.

Eko was supposed to play a re-accruing role in Lost after he got killed but he refused to live in Hawaii.

And i dont think un-lock is the smoke monster. I think Jacob/Esau/Smokey are 3 seperate entitys.

i also concur,i think the smoke monster acts for the island thus judges people,a human/godly figure couldnt do this because they have their own intentions in mind i.e jacob and esau trying to prove each other wrong

There's a 45 minute video which is mostly talking about Lost with Damon Lindelof here:
    http://comicsoncomics.podbean.com/2009/05/20/comics-on-comics-lost-episode-damon-lindelof-jeff-katz-high/

or here (3rd video down): http://spoilerslost.blogspot.com/2009/05/damon-lindelof-on-libby-numbers-mr-eko.html

He says that they had a 4 season arc worked out for Eko's character and from what cooker3 said above makes sense now, especially the "you're next" warning to Locke.

Eko's brother might have been Esau and it was the smoke monster who then killed Eko. I don't think Esau and the smoke monster are the same thing but there is definitely some connection there. With Jacob the 3 of them are like the holy trinity on the island.

From what we know about the smoke monster, it seems to be restricted in where it can go (it can't go beyond the sonar fence thing when it's turned on) whereas Christian & Locke possessed by Esau can go wherever they want on the island. So it would seem unlikely that Esau/Un-Locke is the smoke monster.

Remember the time Ben went to meet the Smoke Monster and it appeared in the form of Alex, didn't she say to do as John Locke said and not try kill him again??
Would it have known it wasn't the real Locke or maybe they are the one

I don't know... Locke is probably my favourite character in Lost, if he's dead and this is just some smoke monster, then I'll be quite disappointed.
Wishful thinking leads me to believe Un-Locke is a new entity formed by the combination of old Locke and esau.
Or hopefully the nuke + history change will prevent old Locke from dying. :(

By the way, how come they found Locke's corpse, but Christian's casket was empty?

I don't think unlock/smoke monster are the same thing. In fact, they're definitely not. The monster has shown to be a completley procedural and automatous being. All it has done is scan certain people and then either killed them or left them alone (as far as I can recall).

This Esua character has acted completely differently. He/she/it has a motive and more human characteristics. It would be an absolute cop out if the two were the same entity and I would personally start a fire bombing campaign against the writers.

My mate reckons the smoke monster is some kind of possessor... so far it has been Locke, Christian, Alex, anyone who died there or whose body ended up there. At the start of the finale we saw a guy talking to Jacob about Jacob's plans, also the monster in a human form. The guy said he wanted to kill Jacob for all that he'd done with regards to bringing all these people to the island - that is why "Un-Locke", or the smoke monster/guy with Jacob, wanted Ben to kill him. Although why he wouldn't just do it himself, I'm not sure...

Yea Damon said, you can have the best story line in the world but if the actors wont play the parts then the story has to change.

It happened with Libby, never got to tell her back story, he said they still hope to, cos its relevant, but the likelihood is not great.
(to be honest has anyone seen her in anything since Lost??-dont know what she's playing at!)

In the grander scheme of good and evil, there always is a balance that is necessary, I think the Smoke monster is def not "un-Locke"
(hate this name, but cant come up with anything else!) but is this balance between good and evil, I'm not saying the smoke monster is benign but def holds some great power to keep both sides in check!

    Just my 2 cents!

Here's a video only posted yesterday which articulates very well the case for Un-Locke being the smoke monster. Check it out:

I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on the video.

It's extremely unlikely that Esau and Smokey are the same being. Esau is deceptive and devious. Smokey is big and blundering. If Smokey wasn't smart enough to get past Dharma's sonic fence then it's unlikely he was able to make it all the way to Hydra island either. So I'm certain that they are two separate entities.

However that doesn't eliminate the possibility of a relationship between the two. Perhaps Esau has some control over Smokey. It's worth pointing out that we never actually saw Smokey take the form of Alex or Yemi. In both cases the apparitions arrived and departed separately from the smoke monster. So it's possible that those apparitions were in fact Esau rather than Smokey.

I still don't really care for this idea though.
