RTÉ 2fm website

Apart from being a badly-designed website anyway, I've just had a look at their 'about us' section. The launch of the station is still in living memory for some, and there are staffers in RTÉ who have been with 2fm since its inception.

Yet... they have to go to Wikipedia to get information about themselves. And even then they can't be arsed rewording it, or simply removing the hyperlinks to even attempt to make it a little less obvious. It kinda damages the credibility of the site if they rely on the not-entirely-reliable Wikipedia for their info, imo.

The opening paragraph is from Wiki, the rest is taken from the old site.

2fm said so in the press extravaganza for the website launch. It was worn in the Irish papers as a badge of honour, bizarrely, as if squandering a quarter of a million euro on a glorified myspace page was something to be proud of.

    Here's the Sunday business post's puff-piece:
The transformation was initiated last year with the help of Waterford-based IT company Catch, and has cost €230,000 to develop.

Catch...they were definitely caught with that one. How on earth could a site cost that much?

Thanks for that. God what a waste. I wonder would it cost that much now?

Some badge of honour more like a badge of shame.

    Some alexa.com traffic rank comparisons

    RTE.ie - 3,632

    Boards.ie - 5,547

    Newtalk.ie - 160,061

    2fm.ie - 2,175,297

The rank is calculated using a 3 month average, 2fm.ie has only been up and running for 10 weeks so it is probably just a glitch. But if it is true......:D

    Whats this rank calculation?

It is a measure of a website's popularity. The rank is calculated using a combination of average daily vistors and pageviews over the last 3 months. The most popular is ranked number 1. So for a website, which cost 230,000euros to develop, to be ranked 2,175,297th would be fairly disastrous.

But isn't the official URL for 2FM...

www.rte.ie/2fm which now redirects to http://2fm.rte.ie/

I've not heard them call out the website as www.2fm.ie for years.

Your right, Alexa.com doesn't give a seperate ranking for the new 2fm website it just gives the overall rank for RTE.ie. Which means, there doesn't seem to be a way of checking if 2fm's website traffic justifies its cost. Is this deliberate? Seems strange, but then again I'm no expert on these things.

Well, for a lot of broadcasters, especially PSB's that have multiple channels or stations, they normally "hide" behind the one URL. Think BBC and ABC in Australia.

If their "portal" gets all the glory, its hard to independently delve deeper into the stats.

The new website is badly designed, hard to navigate, and in my opinion is not worth even €230.
