    Hi,

Car died yesterday. Its a 99 Saloon 318i in good nick (was) with 140K miles.

Would it be worth getting a new engine & if so WHERE? Traynors have none!

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers

You could try ringing as many vehicle dismantlers as possible to find out if they have one - try www.goldenpages.ie
Failing that, you could try overseas in Engerland - http://www.fabdirect.com/default.asp?id=169&p=109&name=Wheels&page=BMW%20Parts They should be able to get it shipped over to you, but you're gonna have to sort someone out to fit it.
www.accarsales.ie are a dublin based BMW specialist if you want to try getting in contact with them.

Sure it would be worth changing the engine. Try scrapyards, ads on the net or eBay - there may be someone who dismantle the same model.

As a matter of interest - how did it happen? The engine bearings are almost undestructible until there is enough oil in the engine, no blocked canals and the pump works OK.

    Regards.

Ummm sounds strange to be honest... The engine bearings don't just fail, typically they get noisy first... I've never heard of an engine going in one of these TBH. Did the car run low on oil?

You should be able to pick up an engine for it, probably from the north fairly easy. I'm guessing its an E46 so its a 1.9 M43TU engine...

The M43 engine was a good solid proven engine and quite reliable, had one with > 190K miles on it.

Engine oil did run low a month back. I topped up a day later. Bad move on my behalf. I thought the light was a warning. The noise is also there in the engine. 2 mechanics both said the same thing.

    Thanks for the advice.

The yellow light is a warning light, so if it was yellow your level was just low, and shouldn't damage the engine, if you topped it up the next day....

What sort of noise are you getting?

These engines do tend to leak oil from where the oil filter housing meets the block, the 'o' ring on the oil filter non return valve leeks like a fecker....

A good 2nd hand engine plus fitting would probably set you back about a grand.

I thought the engine alone would have cost that?!

    The light was red.

The noise is terrible! Mainly happens when you press the accelerator. Best way I can describe it would be a loud clanking noise.

When the red oil pressure light comes on, you have just a few seconds to save the engine before it is damaged. But anyway, get a new (second hand) engine and look after it.

Rang around a load of places & had no joy in getting a new engine. A guy recommended "IVI Engines" to me. They called me there & offered supply & fit for €2400.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

There are a good few suppliers in UK that you can find on eBay. See this one:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E46-COUPE-V-REG-1999-BREAKING-318-ENGINE_W0QQitemZ260384170631QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3ca01b2287&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Or have a look at this link:

    Good Luck.

Where are you getting that figure from?

I thought about €1000 or less might be right from a breakersyard.

I'd try a few of the breakers around Dublin. Did a replacement job a few

years ago myself, great cars to work on, plenty of access, every part fitted

like clockwork, job done in a day. Good luck.

If Traynors had one in stock they would be charging around the €800 mark.

Labour is at least 1 full day.

How much would be the average price of labour per day?

Varies hugely on where you get it done. A small independent might charge you €500 if its a straightforward job and achieveable in 1 day, that would a very good price. You'd be best getting a quote on the swap regardless of time taken.

Ring around as many as you can. Get onto the BMW forums for advice.

Good luck with it. I was in the same situation last year when the engine went in my e36 and it took a long time to source and get a replacement engine swapped in.
