I was just looking up reviews of Helsinki there and it got quite a bashing, so I decided to check the reviews of Ireland and the general thing said is that its a very nice pretty country but kind of bland.

    How can we change this?

I started a thread a while ago kind of on this topic,

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055494685

Basically it was about that there is not much to do in Ireland and that most activities are based around our huge drinking/pub culture.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Ireland#Pub_culture

I guess somehow we need to take the focus off this and find other activities and aspects of our culture to offer tourists ?? I dunno its a hard one.

Eh I'm not sure about that playing a part in Ireland being 'bland', well it sort of is, but changes needed to be made back in the 60's, we're really just catching up. I suppose it depends what you're used to, for example if you're from London/Paris/New York, Ireland(or Dublin) just doesn't offer that same vibrancy, or 'City that never sleeps' way of life.

I'd have great plans but way too outlandish to ever happen. We'd need a bomb to decimate the city before I could even begin to start my proposals.:D

    Anyone got any realistic ideas?

We could get a hacker to break into their site and change "pretty" to "amazing" and "bland" to "magical".

However, I'd imagine the admins would soon change the words back as soon as they notice it?

I say you should go ahead with your plans. Be the change you wanna see in the world!!

I say the only thing that can make Ireland more exciting is more innovative local businesses. We need more local business people adding color to this country, atleast to Dublin. We need like decent leisure centers and have other options to go to on a friday night apart from a pub or a club.

This is why i like London. There's always something you can find to do there. All you can think of doing in Dublin is to go to the cinema and then go to a pub or a club and mingle with a bunch of people who're completely hammered.

They're mostly Americans who have herd of Ireland as the magical land of leprechauns and guinness and they'ld want to check it out so that they can go back to their mates and brag about the time they were in Ireland and stood by the Cliffs of Mohr...

The others probably have nothing better to do.

    I'm bad at stereotyping!!

IMO, if you're coming to Ireland to be entertained, you're coming here for the wrong reasons. We shouldn't try to cater for the Disneyland/Altan Towers/etc kind of tourist because we'll never be that kind of destination.

Cheerleaders. Lots of cheerleaders. It almost works for cricket, so why not Ireland?

The irony of it all is that the character in Die Hard was actually referring to "Stockholm Syndrome" and incorrectly called by its common misnomer "Helsinki Syndrome". So the mistake had been made before the dumb Anchor even says "as in Helsinki Sweden" (or maybe that was the whole point?) :)
