I have a Dell Inspiron laptop (XP Home) & the network icon in the system tray constantly shows, even when I have it set not to.

I have it turned off in the network properties (see pic) but is still appears in the system tray even when the cable is disconnected.

    How can I stop this?

Are you sure you don't have any other network adapters installed which the icon may related to? When you tick that box you've circled above do you notice you see a second one?

    No I don't.

The icon in question is definitely related to my Local Area Network connection. The problem isn't related to when I'm connected, It's when I disconnect the RJ45 cable the icon pops up with the red X on it.

I should be able to disable that surely?

The OS is newly restored from the restore partition so I don't think it's anything dodgy?

Adjust the icon settings for the taskbar: set the network adapter icon to never appear.

    • Right click in system tray
    • Customise notifications
    • Local Area Connection --> behaviour: always hide

    This should work :)

I have tried that ethernet & it does hide it but the minute I unplug the cable the two monitors with the red X are back

Have you tried a reliable auld restart? The system tray icons seem to get a bit 'confused' over time. When all else fails :pac:
