Thought this was interesting.Post Mistress scanned the ticket and threw it in the bin when it didn't show a winner. Some time later had to go looking for same ticket after National Lottery phoned to say she had scanned a winner!!
Luckily for the people involved, they are 25,000 yoyos richer.
But I have to wonder why didn't it show a winner in the first place? I dread to think how many times I could have won a nice little sum, only for the shop/garage /post-office to tell me its not a winner:eek::D;)
When I do the lotto these days I check it on line, but after reading that incident I'll have to pay more attention in future:)

I did the Lotto for the job about 2 months ago, checked the tickets at home and there was 6 winners amongst the 30 tickets.
Got into work and wasn't sure which was a winner when it came time to collect as I stupidly hadn't marked them, so scanned them into one of the machines in the shop.
Every single one of them came up as 'No Winner'.

I definitely don't trust those machines for checking your tickets in the shops. If you are in a syndicate it's far better to make a copy of the ticket or tickets if you dont want to put marks on them and then check them online or ask the shop to print you out the winning numbers. A lot of the time those machines that you check yourself are not working properly.

I bought a ticket in the supermarket in Graignamanagh , where a million was never claimed .
The machine told me , mine was not a winner .

It could have been me !

Can only imagine if shop staff copped onto this:

    *scans ticket* ..............

    20 euro winner

[Shop staff to customer] nothing off that.

[customer to shop staff] Ah sure throw it in the bin.

[shop staff thinks to self] easy money!!!

I prefere checking the numbers from their homepage most of the time. Then putting the ticket to my wallet and double-checking it whenever i happen to go to the shop. This way i can be sure it wasn't a winning ticket thrown away by the simple mistake (machine giving wrong answer or typo at homepage).

only problem is that the machine automatically prints a receipt if its a winner (even if its a scratchcard) - and doesnt print anything if it doesnt win.

receipt is supposed to be attached to the ticket for return to national lottery.
