absent from an exam

A friend of mine never went to an exam because he hadn't a chance of passing, he decided he'd just do a supp in it. However he got a pretty serious e-mail from head of dpt asking him if everything was ok and if he had a med cert to cover his absence. What should he do?

I missed two papers in a subject last year for the same reason. Funny enough, nobody gave two ****s. That's natural science for you. I just sat the repeat. Still didn't pass though. Hope this helps.

I can only say for Computer Science.. but if you don't sit a paper you get excluded from the course and do not get to do supps. Same for if you make no effort in an exam (i.e. hand up empty book)

As far as I know, most (if not all) courses require you to get a certain %age in order to sit the supp. Like 10% or something...

Crap, that sounds pretty serious, should he somehow try to get a med cert of should he contact his tutor telling the truth, Im kinda worried for him...

    11. What happens if I miss an exam (I forgot, I got the dates mixed up, I was ill)?

    * Contact your Tutor immediately so that s/he can find the best solution for your situation.
    * If you don't attend an examination without a valid explanation, you will not be allowed to sit Supplementals in September.
    * If you are ill, make sure you see a doctor and get a medical certificate. Remember that the certificate must be dated, and must state clearly that you are unfit to sit the examination. You must give (or send) this certificate to your Tutor within 3 days.
    * Remember that a medical certificate will not be accepted in explanation for poor performance.

In fairness, its not too difficult to come up with a BS explanation. He could say he suffered from emotional trauma after witnessing a serious assualt earlier in the day. Or something equally dramatic...

Someone eating chocolate, rustling the wrapper at the last exam could have been a traumatic experience for him.

In practice that isn't the case.

How did you prove you hadn't seen the paper and all that jazz?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Didn't. One of those times went it's helps that the lecturer knows you to see and that believes you when you say it was an honest mistake.

Yeah we were told before that last year in CS some guy handed up a blank page and he was allowed repeat...

It's just at the discretion of the examiner as far as I know.

I know someone in European Studies who decided that they weren't going to pass the exam, didn't go, and just spent the day watching TV. They weren't allowed to sit the repeats though and had to redo the whole of third year. Get them to contact their tutor or the education officer immediately to sort it out

Maybe cos their third year exams counted towards their degree?? I know in TP and maths you can't repeat third or fourth year because they actually matter.

The dates don't seem to be posted yet on the TCD site. But yeah they were the start of September last year IIRC.

According to the calendar that was sent around about semestisation, they start on the 31st of August.
