Looking throught the last fifteen or so pages of threads it seems that VWs are the new Fiats, while Fiats seem to be good cars at long last. There seems to a litany of problems with Passats, Golfs and Polos. Is this the real world scenario or is it just exclusive to boards?

Their market share isn't as big as Ford for one, you don't see many Ford related questions on here.

Someone in a previous thread said : "They are not as bad as some people say and not as good as other people say". Sums it up perfectly.

It is opening a can of worms indeed. You will have replies from different car owners defending their cars. It's mens' nature!

I think the perception that VW dealers are very expensive may prompt people to try and find the solution online themselves?

In addition some of their new designs are awful. New Golf is as bland as things get.

They strayed away from the plain but simple designs of the past.

This is where they won IMO. They used to sell under powered and frankly bland cars to the masses that juts went on and on and on.

Bullet proof engineering that didnt require hand holding. The best Golf I ever owned was a 97 1.9d van. I had older ones that gave more trouble but in fairness I was younger and abused them more.

Have an 03 one now and a list of wee niggley things that need doing :(

My VW ownership experience was (Passat)

    1) Very dull car to drive.
    2) No where near as reliable as some owners and VW claim

Maybe Ford owners aren't as good at using the internet?

VW were never the best when is came to the electrics in their cars. They make good solid engines epscially there 1.9 tdi's.As for the new Golf....horrible,horrible and horrible:(.
True statement about the Fiats, they seem to be comming out with new ideas like the 1.4 Bravo Tjet which produces a 120 or 150 bph with speeds of up to 130mph and oviousley a quick take of (0-60 in under 9 seconds).
They also do a 1.6 diesel automatic which is met to be fast aswell (the perfect city car).
