Specialized parts - headset bearing

    Hi -
My headset had been a bit stiff for a while, and the recent wet spins didn't help at all. Last week at the Mount Leinster, the headset started 'bleeding' rust all over the frame. ( I have a specialized ruby pro )

When I got home I took them out and surely, they were totally rusted ... I ordered some Crane creek ones on CRC, but as I tried to fit them earlier, they're just too small ( just a couple of mm )

I called the US customer service of specialised and I was told that the bearings were 'not standard' as they have to fit over the 'non stadard' fork ( the bottom of the fork is 'wrapped' with titanium(?)

Anyway, I attempted to 'fix the old bearings, took them appart, degreased, cleaned, dried and regreased, but not, the seal is fecked, and the part of the bearing that protects the balls, the inside bit, now slips out, doesn't 'lock'. I can't put that back in the headset ... can I? ( i didn't think so )

Your man on the phone said that I will need to get the part from a Specialized dealer ... ie: Cycleways...

The standard bearings I had on the bike were coded ' 41.8x8x45 '
I am not sure what I want you guys to tell me ... any of your spesh riders ever had to change the headset bearings?

    Raam??

    Cheers

I had the boys in Cyclelogical clean the headset out on my Spesh a few months ago as part of a service. Must not have had to replace anything though.

I am actually aware that the 'race' bit that I removed to clean the bearing wasn't the bit that was supposed to be removed to clean and regreased ...

At least I tried, but I am no Sheldon Brown ... I am gutted and feels really crap about it

I think i'd prefer just the chocolate truffle on it own AND stout separately.

bike companys never grease the headsets and hubs with proper grease. Its just a coating to prevent rust. A bike shop worth their salt will strip the headset and hubs and grease them with a proper grease when the bike is assembled(especially decent bikes)

Caroline, just replace the entire headset, by the sounds of it, your cups will be totally ****ed, you can put new bearings in but it will still feel crap, do the job right, it will cost you about e50 including parts and labour.
