is it causing grief for anyone else, last night maps would not load at all, this evening, maps look like a chess board, ie, like a grid, but with the map only showing on every second square

I gave up on it about a year ago. Utterly crap. Way too much on the page to get a good view of the map. Now use bikeroutetoaster.

its awful - bloatware. It takes huge bandwidth, if you try to map more than 50km, it hangs. It took me 2 hours and 7 partial saves, to map my Mizen to Malin ride simply in order that I could get this jpg screen captured - I am NOT Kidding you!

+1, moved around a week ago and find it better, only issue I have is that I can't get distance markers to show on the map. Anyone know how to turn these on?

I've actually found mapmyride quite a nice and clean interface if you're using Firefox with an ad-blocking addon like Adblock Plus. It cleans away all those obtrusive ads and speeds up the site quite a bit.

There are... ethical issues associated with these ad-blockers, but they sure make the Internet a more pleasant place to be.

Had a few teething problems (i.e. user thickness) with bikeroutetoaster and switched to mapmyride a few weeks ago. As a first time user of this sort of web 2.0 malarkey initially was most impressed.
But after using it a few times and now knowing what I wanted, the bloat, the wheedling for money, the UScentric attitude, etc began to grate.
So at the behest of this thread tried the toaster again and it total rocks.
So thank you Mr Internet Collective Wisdom Guy.

gave up on MMR over a year ago. Bikeroutetoaster all the way!

I used mapmyrun when it was initially launched ... and thought that was brilliant ... with each new release, they have just cluttered the UI and made it slower and slower.

Bikeroutetoaster is the biz ... but its easy to make the 1st time mistake of not logging in if you want to get a link at the end of mapping your route. And I like the ease with which you can transfer to garmin. The only thing I don't like is that is it not IE8 compatible yet ... but no biggie.

I tried Bikeroutetoaster last night, It did not like me trying to map a loop, as soon as I started doubling back on myself, its auto route function started drawing wierd routes even if I clicked on a road just a few metres from my last waypoint. I eventually had to switch off autoroute and draw the last half of my spin manually.

also, there's no search box to find a location on the map (or am I missing it)?

Haven't tried a loop on it so can't help you there. No search either.

Here's another on http://www.bikemap.net. I found it as Steephill TV have the Giro mapped out on it. It looks slick and polished but I didn't use it yet. Will later

    Anyone tried it?

yea, just tried it quick, not bad, responsive. I reckon tho that Bikeroutetoaster is the most accurate when auto-routing.
