Cork Marathon Training...

    Hello Folks,
I am entered to run the Cork city Marathon next week but never trained for it...

That gives me 10 days to train for and then run it...

I have not done any running in a long while (Little out of shape) so I am not foolish enough to think I can do well. My plan is to run for as long as I can and see how far I get...

Not worried about time, just want to TRY and hopefully finish it...

    What are my chances???

And any suggestions for how to train over the next 10 days? I'm thinking run 2-3 miles today and then increase by 2 miles a day until the race... ???

    Help appreciated...

    Cheers..

    TonsOfFun.

There is no training that you can do now that will improve you by the time the marathon comes around. So just say a prayer so you can get through it ok. Take plenty of walk breaks during the marathon

You're way too late! Why bother trying to run it at this stage? You'll have a miserable experience and probably never want to run again. If you're set on doing it this year then just walk it.

If I were you I'd try and defer until next year (if possible) and do some decent training (6 months of running 3-4 times a week) beforehand.

Save yourself a lot of pain and do a bit of stewarding or helping at a water station. Train up for 2010.

I'm not out to win the thing by any means but i'm dead set on giving it a go...

I assume i'll blister the hell out of my feet in the race if i don't start running now though..

10 Days training is better then none at all, I feel...

I'll take it easy on the day of course, but for now some running is needed.. :D

I'll keep you updated on my progress until the race and hopefully
your ideas and imput will see me through...

    Cheers again..

As others have said, you've left it way too late to start training for the race. I have visions of you collapsing between 10 an 16 miles, if you last that long!

In answer to your question, you have absolutely no chance whatsoever! Do yourself, and the medical teams a favour and just offer to steward or watch the race...

Of course there's training he can to help improve his time between now and the marathon. It's obviously not enough time to train for a marathon, but a few days running would be far better than none.

I'm very interested to see how this guy gets on, and I'm disappointed that everyone here is discouraging him - I wanna know what Average Joe can do off no training! It would be quite a feat to complete it without stopping or walking I think, but I wouldn't be qualified to say whether or not it is safe to attempt it.

If this guy ran the full marathon off no training, I would find that far more inspiring than some dude training for 6 months and running 2:57.

Here's the training I'd suggest for the the ten days:

    Day 1: 2 miles
    Day 2: 6 miles
    Day 3: Rest
    Day 4: 3 miles
    Day 5: 4 miles
    Day 6: Rest
    Day 7: 2 miles
    Day 8: Rest
    Day 9: 1 mile
    Day 10: RACE

If you're going to run it, make sure you're aware of any risks.

Glad we've established that you're not out to win it ;)

I admire you're positivity but you are dillusional to think that you can benefit from any training at this stage...and even more so to think that you can run 26.2 miles.

What's the furthest/longest you've ever run? In your original post you said you were very out of shape and hadn't trained in a long while. As colblimp says you could be taking a real risk by trying to run it..

It might be interesting to see the result but that doesn't mean it's not a stupid idea... If he's going to do it he should just walk all (or the vast majority) of it...

    Thanks for the support Cfitz...

Like I said to start I'm not in great shape at the moment and have not done any running in a long while (several months). Could do with dropping a stone like.
So actual running is what i need to practice.

I have been doing some spin classes lately to try get back in shape and lose weight (So My lungs are hopefully ok)...

As i said before, I don't know how well I can do but I intend to try anyway..
I'm well aware of the risks too...

I'll gladly keep you updated on my progress, and we'll let the race decide how far I (Or Average Joe) can make it..

The training schedule posted above I'll start with tonight and let you know how things go..

Any more advice would be great..

Try to curb the negativity a little though as I know this is going to be a big uphill climb for me....

    Cheers..

The longest I've run before is probably around the 10 mile mark (couple years ago now though), but I'm only 24 so we'll see what happens..

I would say go for it on the condition that you wear some kind of disclaimer on the back of your t-shirt that says, if or when I collapse ,please, I urge all other runners not to stop and help me, please just keep running as you who have trained and deserve to have a great day and I do not wish to ruin it for you by being stupid.

looks like it from a muppet check. I'm locking this for the moment, until I'm convinced otherwise.
