I bought this from PC world on wednesday
    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ie/en/ho/WF10a/321957-321957-3329743-3848802-3848802-3768356.html?lang=en&cc=ie

    (It's the HP G70-120EA)

and when I got home from work last night the touchpad and left button were not working!! I've only had it for a day!!

Now before I go charging into PC world tomorrow is there anything I can try that will fix it? The actual touchpad works (in that it makes the pointer move where I want) but when I try to tap it, nothing, same for the left button. The right works fine.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance guys!

P.S It hasn't been dropped, bashed, knocked or had any food or liquids near it!

Not sure what is causing it but the same thing happened to my sister when she bought a netbook from PC World. Booted up the first two times no problem, then the third time there were issues, and she had the same touchpad problem.

I spent a good few hours trying to see what the problem was but to no avail, other than figuring out it was a hardware fault and not a software issue.

In your taskbar, beside the clock, is there an icon pertaining to the touchpad? Is it an animated one that shows where you have your finger on the pad or if you are clicking the right button? If so, see if the part of the icon resembling your left click shows that it is being depressed even though you aren't touching it.

If this is the case then it is a hardware issue. Your best bet would be to just bring your laptop back to PC World and ask for a replacement, which is what my sister got.

    Best of luck.

    Hey OP,

I had a similar prob with my Acer Aspire 100 Netbook, touchpad stopped working but was fine with a mouse. After 48 hrs I found a ref on Google to a function (Fn & F7) that disables the touchpad & associated buttons. I'd hit those keys unknowingly.

Fear this may not be your problem if the right button's still working (do I read your post right?)

READ THE manual re mouse pad off.SOME hps have a small button ontop of the touch pad to switch it off so you can use usb mouse.ITS a very small rectangular button.I Prefer to use a mini usb mouse as the touchpad is not as comfortable as a usb mouse.I NEVER use it.HP COM support has all the manuals 4download.Look HP uk website.

Well that was a reaction from PC World instead of saying "we have to send it away"

Anyway good luck with your new laptop.

Glad it was sorted so easily. I knew that you would get a replacement going on my sister's experience. If it is only a few days old, they can't be bothered and just replace it these days. If it is a couple of months old or more then they generally send it for repair.
