    No there won't

Just a query - what happens when on the bike if you get a puncture/mechanical of some description, and thus cant complete your journey on the bike.
You drop it off at the nearest station (they are every 300m so you can walk it) and the scheme will fix it. In Paris there is a custom of rotating the saddle backwards to indicate the bike needs mechanical attention.
I may use these bikes, in that there will be bikes at Hueston station and bikes close to where I work, so it would be handy for me some days to use these bikes.
There are no bikes at Heuston station- this is because Heuston is too far out of the city centre and it was deemed impossible to provide intermediate stations every 300m. The net effect of a station at Heuston would be depletion in the morning and overfilling at night preventing you from returning the bike (if a station is full that is not normally a big problem as there will be another one within 300m which you can use as an alternative.) So the idea was it was not just "a station at Heuston" but the expansion west of the entire area of the scheme that would be required, which would spread it too thin in phase one. Hopefully it can be expanded in a second phase.

What do they do in the other countries where they have these bikes.

If you get a puncture, you have to wheel it back to the nearest stand

Unfortunately there's going to be no stands anywhere near Heuston (too many people would use them apparently ), which would be the one scenario I could see myself using them for.

    Is this map correct?
    http://www.aaireland.ie/download/bikescheme.pdf

If it is, the bike station just beyond Collins Barrack might be some use travelling on fro Heuston, if you were travelling to the western end of the bike-station distribution. Going to Mountjoy from Heuston by walking down past Collins Barracks and cycling the rest of the way probably would be the fastest way of getting there. Faster than Luas and walking, I'd bet.

By 'Mountjoy', I meant 'Mountjoy Square'.

There's a newer map here: http://www.awaycity.com/wiki/Dublin/Dublinbikes . According to this one, the nearest stand is on Greek street.

Ah, that's a pity. The old map looked as if there would be one in Smithfield Terrace. Greek St looks about 250-300m further on again.

would they inflate the price to make it look like a better deal for DCC. You bet they would.

Conspiracy theorist? Sometimes things just are as them seem.

    Incredibly repetitive thread, BTW.

makes you wana bang your head off the wall doesnt it?

Im not a conspiracy theorist, but swindling and inflating costs to make more money is the order of the day in ireland, sure why do you think the banks are ****ed?
Jc decaux are known to be a slimey greedy shower of pricks.
    Seems totally plausible.

Is it just me or do some of the locations seem destined to have a higher than normal vandalism rate?
(Eccles st, Hardwicke st jumped out at me)

you read my mind, im quite annoyed for returning and now im going to be going back around in circles.

I think its time this thread died, IMO.

You all know what i think of it. Its a good idea, but poorly executed.

That's the clearest statement I think I've read from you on this, although I was under the impression you thought it was a rubbish idea.

Most of us probably agree that the execution has left something to be desired.

They should put a bike station in Rialto to distract the local kids from stealing the fire extinguishers from our apartment block every week.

that map isn't very accurate other than by street name judging by the pearse street one..(off by maybe 200m)

So they are targetting september for these to come into play. Its now almost july so there is 2 and a bit months to:

    A) find Mechanics
    B) get staff to run the show.

    Then secondary:
C)Make public accurate maps of the locations
d)Make public the exact cost to DCC residents.
    E) make public the exact cost overall.
    F) Advertise it.
G)Let us know exactly where he ads are and what ones are being removed..
G)Let us know exactly what jc decaux are doing for tourism.

These aint unreasonable demands, but everything is a mess, there is no source of definate Info.

The reason there is no clarity? IMO its because its a **** up and people are getting backhanders, and they are scared ****less what would happen if the public find out.

    1. How do you know they haven't already organised mechanics?

    2. How do you know people are getting backhanders?

    3. Have you asked DCC for details on the financial elements of the deal?

Not sure if this has been mentioned before (22 pages of posts sorry) but is there a reason why there is so few stations on the north side where as far as I know (and can see) most of the ads seem to be.
(expecting a comment or two about the northside already getting enough bikes from the southside already ;) )

its been discussed, at utter length, lets not go there again... go searching if your curious...

I thought they were to use car parking spaces for the new Velib stands and not diminish previous bicycle facilities.
Have they replaced a previously existing 'normal' bike parking site (Ormond quay near the bridge at Capel Street) with one of the paid bike things?

I'm not sure about all of them, but that's certainly the case at my local one (Talbot Street) where they've taken a few car parking spaces over.

exchecquer st has lost some car parking spaces too.

Same on the canal near Baggot St

It was in the paper yesterday that 'some' 167 car spaces were taken by the scheme across the city.

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/paysystem-tests-hold-up-rollout-of-83641000-bikes-1784842.html

Also, yesterday at approx 7am I seen a team of four unloading Velib bikes from the back of a van on Parnell Street. Two of these were wearing helmets, I presume they were out testing the bikes on Dublin streets?

    +1.

There are three velib stations very near my office (on de northside I hasten to add - Parnell Square, Mountjoy Square and Hardwicke St), and all have taken on-street car parking spaces. Looking forward to seeing them in action, and using the bikes of course.

Dublin City Councillors have asked and were told the details would not be given out due to 'commercial sensitivity' which is odd, since it's a done deal - unless something is funny about the whole thing.

Nobody seems able to get their hands on the whole deal.

This was in the Irish Times week before last:-

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/weekend/2009/0613/1224248748656.html

Paris has 20,000 bikes & a population of about 2.2 million = 1 bike for every 110 people

Dublin is getting 450 bikes. The population of Dublin City Council's area is a shade over 500,000. That equals 1 bike for every 1111 people !! And that's a very generous calculation - if you add in the estimated 1.1 million who live in the "greater Dublin Area" - the ratio falls to 1 bike for every 2,400 people.

At best guess we're getting 10 times less bikes than the Parisians!!!

I wonder how many advertising signs they have to put up with.

Perhaps someone from the City Council (who monitor this forum) would care to answer.
