Having been the owner of a trek 1000 since last year, it has gradually dawned on me that the supplied alexrims at 450 are not exactly great and seem to get out of true easily. I've been considering a few upgrades - namely the following, shimano rs20 and rs30's, mavic askiums and bontrager race. Any thoughts on any me these and also are there compatibility issues seeing i've an 8 speed. I've looked at going to 9 speed cassette go case there are, but the cost of tiagra shifters is ridiculous !

Have mavic aksiums for training on myself and I can't fault them as of yet - had them about 4 or 5 months now. Only thing is that there is quite a low spoke count on them so they may not suit depending on your weight.

The 8 speed cassette should fit no problem - just make sure the freehub body is Shimano (M10 i think it's called for 8/9/10 speed compatibility)

If you're still looking to upgrade from 8 speed, there's no point in going to 9 speed - you might as well go to 10 speed 105. Shifters are always the most expensive part but you could try and pick up a second hand set.

To be honest, if you're upgrading a lot of your groupset you're probably better off getting a new bike.

The cost of 105 would be more than i paid for the bike - thats pretty mad when you think about it. I'm keeping an eye on ebay for second hand shifters - the bike has a tiagra deraileur so is 9 speed capable. If i can get some cheap shifters then game on!

The cost of going 10 speed and adding wheels would probably mean i'm better off getting a planetx/focus/ribble under cycle to work here in NI, by the time wheels and a new groupset are paid for, however at the same time i'd feel it was a bit overkill for what i'm doing with it.
