No, AFAIK, definitely not in hand luggage. Even in your checked in luggage, a friend of mine was made open his bag and take his out and dump it whereas they never said anything about my other friend's one in his bag!

Moral of story: It can be hit and miss, definitely not in hand luggage!

This happened in Berlin Schonefeld where they put your luggage through an x-ray machine on the way into the check-in area.

    Prohibited items, BAA airports
....., cigarette lighters and non-safety matches may not be carried in either cabin or hold baggage.
Passengers may carry a single lighter about their person. Any additional lighters discovered during security screening cannot be taken into the restricted zone.
    .............

    Prohibited items ORK airport
....Fire lighters, lighter fuel, paints, thinners. Cigarette lighters do not seem to be mentioned although you are asked to read below

I've had no problem bringing my zippo through security at stansted/gatwick/luton/newcastle airports in the UK. Same with malaga recently too. The TSA in the states allowed zippos back inflight in august 07,never been a problem there either.

I've actually forgotten a couple of times that i had a disposable lighter left in the cigarette box and haven't been pulled up on it either.

I suppose it is the same in most countries! No hassle unless a manager is standing there monitoring security screening procedures or a representative for the Dept. for Transport.

Remember the walk through's can be set to random and usually are! If you walk through and hear a beep, beep, beep then you haven't set it off but lucky you! You are the 'x' person to come through and now can enjoy a body search from our excellently trained staff
