Recording from Sky+ but getting 4:3 help?

I have a Philips DVDR3480 DVD recorder and I have a series recorded on my Sky+ box for a friend who asked me to record a series for him while he was abroad.

I have been trying to record them and every single time they are recording in 4:3 instead of 16:9, I have everything set right with the Sky+ box set to 16:9 on both outputs and RGB instead of PAL. I have the DVD Recorder set to 16:9 also yet it records in 4:3. It is driving me totally insane, I spent ages looking it up today and have discovered how to set the WSS Flag to 16:9 using ifoedit and reburning the disk which makes it 16:9 ok.

However I want to archive them to Xvid .avi and plank them on a DVD for him as he plans to stream them from his PC to his Xbox for viewing. I have 4 different DVD to .avi rippers and a few on shareware trials and no single programme will rip them to 16:9 .avi files despite the .ifo aspect ration change made using ifoedit.

I am totally defeated and am getting ready to get a new DVD-PVR recorder and will gladly smash the old one over this. I will never ever again buy philips in my life over this.

Any clues to save my Philips DVD Recorder from the sledgehammer?

What model Sky+ box do you have (Pace PVR2 etc...)?
Certain Sky+ boxes will only output programmes using the copy function in 4:3 no matter if the original recording on the Sky+ box is 16:9
