Looking for new laptop

I'm looking for a new laptop, not willing to spend much though, €350 or so.

I want it for just general use, internet, music and the like. The most demanding thing i want it for is recording music though, so my main interest is the processor and RAM. And i don't need it for mobility.

I was going to get that €339 Fujitsu that Dunnes were selling but i missed out on it.

Also, the only way i can buy anything from the internet is with a 3v voucher so i can't spend more than €350 on the internet.

I was looking at the Refurb models from laptopsdirect.ie but from what i've heard, their customer service is terrible, and i'd trust them even less with a refurb.

    Thanks,
    Eamonn

The problem is that right now, almost every machine ships with Vista, XP isn't available any more except for netbooks and old stock. And Vista just doesnt run well on the typical €350 laptop - most of them come with single-core celerons, 1GB ram and slow old-gen hard drives. You really don't want to be running Vista with such low specs, especially if you're hoping to do music production.

I'd recommend maybe looking at used machines (loaded with XP), or maybe trying to stretch the budget closer to €450, where there are a few nice machines available that will run a lot better than the typical €350 laptop.

Well i was looking at some of the used ones on Dabs but my brother said its not the best idea, considering it only comes with 90 day warranty. Should i not mind the warranty and just go for the specs?

But lets say something were to go wrong, are laptops that difficult to fix depending on the problem? My brother knows quite a bit about computers so i could have him fix anything out of my league.

I can't vouch for dabs or anywhere else, I don't know what their used or refurb machines are like.

In relation to fixing a machine, you don't really want to be messing around with that kind of stuff if youre on such a tight budge, so I wouldn't buy something used or refurb if there's any indications that its a bit dodgy. If something goes on you, by the time you get replacement parts, and postage etc, you'd have been better off just stretching the budget and getting something better in the first place. Like I say, there are some very nice machines in the €450 range if you shop around.
