    Hi all,

I'm doing my first half marathon at 9am on Saturday morning, just wondering what people reckon about eating late the night before.
I'll be working until 9pm so is a big meal afterwards recommended or keep it light and have a banana or two in the morning 2 hours before the race??
    Cheers for any help!

    I think everybody is different.

If it was me Id have some pasta, tomato sauce and chicken after the work and then have a proper breakfast of coffee, porridge and wholegrain toast the morning of the race but Ive got a big appetite and can run on a full stomach.

I imagine its quite important though to get a good solid breakfast before a half so if you dont think you could handle that maybe something light after work (turkey sandwhich) and a good breakfast.

In general Id stay away from fatty food, sugary food or anything overly processed and you should be alright........and lots of water.

Oh and whatever you do dont try anything new the night before the race. Generally let your training runs guide you...how do you eat before them.

Cheers for the reply, i generally run quite early before breakfast but for longer runs i try to have something small before i go. I ran 12miles yesterday and was exhausted after 8 as i'd had no breakfast,so want to make sure i don't find myself in the same boat this time.
I also suffer a bit from runners trots which makes me want to eat a bit less but i've been reading up on it and might try a motillium to settle my stomach before it..
I'm a big guy, 16stone, am trying to lose weight aswell but i may have a big dinner after work alright which should hopefully see me through energywise

I always have a breakfast - if it's an early race - say 09:00 - I'd set the alarm for 05:30, up and a bit of porridge or muesli with honey and then back in the scratcher for an hour and a bit. If you want to get the guts working then a big bottle of water and 2 espressos and you should have the bomb doors primed!

That said, don't do anything weird or new.

Just do whatever you normally do. Maybe eat a little earlier and a little lighter but definitely don't go doing anything you've never done before. I've always been careful to have exactly the same breakfast as normal - I know how that sits & how my body will deal with it. That way no surprises!

    Best of luck!
