Perhaps you guys can shed some light on this, this morning my mother went to work as usual in a local shoe shop, were she opens up every morning, only to discover the locks were changed during the night! Turns out the owner who is rarely there had not been paying any of his bills and the shopping centre closed the place because he was ducking them on the rent.

She’s a bit shocked and is now out of the job it seems. She works maybe 5 or 6 days a week im not sure how much she is earning perhaps 200-300 euro p/w. The owner wont even answer his phone and hung up on her when she called..!

I have no idea if she is now dropped cold or is she entitled to anything? Who does she go to to find out?

    Thanks

She should go to the Social welfare office and sign on immediately. She is dropped cold. The shopkeeper is not going to pay the arrears of rent. She might be entitled to redundancy and/or unfair dismissal. She should make a claim from a rights commissioner for the wages due because of a lack of notice. If she has no written terms of employment she should also make a claim for that.

I hope they are part time hours as that's very low

Yes it was part time work, but even at that she was never paid very well. The owner ran the shop really badly. I'm really trying to help my Mam get the most from this a-hole.

Thanks for the advice Jo King. Can you tell me where to find a right's commissioner?

Sounds like an opportunity for you Mother to approach the Shopping centre, take up the lease and run the shop properly.

Then she might get paid properly and with the right help from a partner actually make some money from the place.
