Hi, i'm meant to be travelling to England (Newcastle) next week but have come upon a possible problem. Foolishly i didn't realise that my passport is out of date (by a month) and am wondering what the protocall for me to do now is? Can you travel to the UK with just a valid photo id? I'll be flying with ryanair. What do i need to do? Get a temporary one or renew this one... but i presume that would take quite a bit of time.
    Any info would be great.

I found a link to a similar question here

    http://www-srv-3.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055249800

It's over a year old though so not sure if it's still valid.

I'd suggest giving ryanair a call to check

If you have a valid driver's license and hold Irish citizenship, you can check-in at the airport, pay the fee.

If not, then you need to go to the passport office and get an express passport:
If you need a passport in less than 10 days you will need to apply in person to the Dublin or Cork Passport office with a completed application and proof of travel, eg internet booking or travel tickets.

-from the Department of Foreign Affairs' website

To get an express passport (valid for 10 years) it'll set you back 80euro for the passport, and 55 euro for the express fee.

To get a temporary, out-of-hours passport, it would be 110 euros. But this will expire, and you then need to pay 80 euros to apply normally for a regular passport for future travel.

thanks for that. I do have a government issued identification (age) card but its not a driving licence, does it have to be a licence?
Also i'm not sure but are you still able to check in at the airport, i understood it now has to be done online (as of may 20th i think) and this would mean, possibly, that nothing other than a passport would do? sorry for this and thanks again for the help.

If you booked your flights before 20th May, you're still entitled to checkin at the airport.

But the National Age Card is no good for flying to the UK. It needs to be a passport or a driving licence.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news quacks!

balls. haven't booked the flights yet, was just on my way to book it when i decided to root out my passport first only to discover...
Will a provisional licence do (i have one at home but i'm not there) or does it make no difference at this stage, its either a passport or nothing..

    Only a passport will do.
passengers making new bookings from the 20th May 2009 onwards will no longer be able to select to check-in at the airport and therefore will be unable to book flights and use their driving licence as photo-id.

From the 1st October 2009 driving licences will NO LONGER be an acceptable travel document on Ryanair flights

You need to get to the passport office and get a new one. Be prepared to pay a premium for this service and make sure to take all the documents needed to process the application.

    I've a similar problem.
I'm booked with ryanair to fly to London in July but my sister's passport is out of date. We have online check in. She has a full driving licence, will that do?

Passport or you don't travel with Ryanair on any new bookings. No exceptions.

That is all anyone needs to know now.
