Weight Gain

For the past 6 weeks I have been sticking to a healthy eating plan, (weight watchers) with high protein and low carbs. I do spinning classes 3 times a week, pilates once a week and threadmill/x trainer twice a week.

I am getting annoyed because I am not seeing any results either on the scale or with my clothes. Any suggestions? I gave up cigarettes about 6 weeks ago and thought maybe this is the reason because my metabolism is slower?

    Thanks,

Stick with it. Maybe add some weights to your program (you will not get muscular). I'm not a big fan of weight watchers myself (though I acknowledge that it works for a lot of people). What would you eat on a typical day?

Quitting smoking will have little to do with it. I did find that I snacked more when I quit smoking. You're might be trying to feed the hunger for nicotine with food (that's where weight gain after quitting usually comes from).

Just for clarity: You quit smoking, started weight watchers and upped your exercise at the same time, is that right?

Yeh defo add full body workout with weights they may not make much difference on the weighing scales but you should get a more "streamlined" figure. If your doing weights I find high resistence of 8/10 reps best and up the weights when 8/10 reps because easy.

Weightwatchers generally means ''i can eat whatever I please so long as i keep score''.

Why not post up what you eat and we'll see how it is?

Hi thanks for all the replies. Firstly, i did start exercising, quit smoking and joined WW all at the same time! I forgot to mention i also do weights three times per week (about 30 min session) all machine based and then ab work. A typical daily diet for me is as follows

breakfast: 2 weetabix and slimline milk or hard boiled egg and brown WW bread

    11am: apple and WW yogurt

lunch: salad and homemade veg soup

4pm: 2 ryvita with light philadelphia and tomato and cucumber

    dinner; fish/chicken and steamed veg

I am definitely eating alot more now than i ever did when i smoked but it also alot healthier, i never really ate vegetables before.

Just coming back to the weights again. Did you get advise or a program in your gym on the weights to use. Machines are fine but you tend to need to use more of them than free weights in order to get a full body workout as the machines tend to "isolate" mucles more. If your doing a full workout in one session make sure you target all your muscles. When I joined the gym and had my induction the Gym instructor just put me down for 6 machines to use as if to say 6 is enough and the magic number. He failed to add any excerises for my back or hamstings (back of top leg). and told me to do 12 reps. If I was to stick to what the instuctor said I would not see much results and I know so many women that use wieghts in the gym but they use the same low resistence and high reps each time, it's a bit like walking slowly on the tradmill is not going to do much for cardio fitness. You need to challange you body constantly as regards to cardio and weights. best of luck with it you sound like your on track

Are you maybe retaining water? I don't see how you could gain weight with that little food. I mean, I'm not seeing portion sizes or whatever, but it sounds like a very small amount of food.

yeah i figured myself that i wasnt eating a whole lot, maybe it is water retention. I have also given up caffeine lately so i suppose thats not helping.

Have you actually gained weight? The thread title insinuates so but your original post says there's been no change?

Personally I think you need to eat more.

Are you using the same scales early morning on an empty stomach after a trip to the bathroom? :)

I weight myself on sunday morning before my workout, and I weighed myself an hour later after the workout and I was a lb heavier.

I was going on the weight watcher weighing scales, once a week at the same time.

imho your diet is very far from 'high protein - low carb' diet. you basically eat some serious protein only once a day dinner (apart the day when you have a boiled egg for breakfast). And I have to agree with the person above that it sounds very little of food you're eating, maybe you're calories are too low? sorry, I don't buy all that WW thing, all those points and all. Calorie is a calorie and they just add up... and some calories are better than others...

Any suggestions for change? I feel like i eat healthy however cant see how increasing the amount of food while maintaining the same level of exercise would help do anything apart from increase my weight even more?

While it may have been the same time, could there have been other variables, such as what you ate, water intake/hydration, bowel movements etc?

I think the best time to weight yourself is first thing in the morning, right after a bowel movement, and before breakfast. it is the most consistent time as it reduces the any variables.

On the whole WW thing, i have no experience of it, other than my mother trying it years ago, and those WW biscuits and bread she still gets, but if it is just a matter of getting a certain amount of points in a day, i don't buy it. i mean if you use up all you're points with one big chocolate cake for example, thats hardly healthy eating and conducive to (healthy) weight loss. i think you are better of just eating good, clean, whole, fresh foods and to have some awareness of what you're eating in terms of cals, protein, fat, carbs etc. All calories are not equal, and neither are all WW points.

I wouldn't go nuts on the WW products either - i imagine they are still very processed still, and contain a lot of additives. i would go for fresh no processed foods instead - even if it might have more overall calories, you know they're all quality cals which our bodies are designed to use, and when complemented with other healthy foos will give you a complete and balanced diet. And just as importantly, you can probably find alternative products without the WW logo which are just as healthy, and cost a lot less!

2 and a half lbs in two weeks sounds pretty good to me?

if you can keep up an average of a lb a week over a year is nearly 4 stone

That's actually decent going. My rule is: I'm hungry if I lose 2lb's a week and don't notice it if I'm losing 1lb a week (and eating properly). Any attempt at losing more than 2lb's in a week = OMG STARVING.
