Had a bit of a curve ball thrown at me last night when (a nameless individual) said that he knew someone who could hear 1/2 a dB of compression.

    Is this True?

theoretically possible but very very highly unlikely. chances are that he's hearing the tone imparted on the signal by the compressor rather than actual gain reduction.

more to the point, what kind of eejit actually tells people they can hear 1/2db of gain reduction? (ah I'm sure if I could, I would!)

Also attack and release times would play a huge factor in this.

But yeah, most likely character imparted by said compressor.
