Tried to book online and got date for September, the guy on the NCT booking phone line said the same, the same situation in all centres he added. Can i drive without valid NCT disc, with test booked in 4 months or it's some kind support for car dealers - the fine 5 grands without the valid disc :(

Once you have the booking confirmation then no Garda is gonna do you for it.
I've heard multiple Guards tell people this. They know the situation at the moment as well

    Fair play for them then

See http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055560136 - could be of use.
And as for the gardai, if a garda wants to do you (for whatever reason) then they will - don't assume there is a policy there that they will turn a blind eye!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I've no doubt the vast majority of Gardai are reasonable and will accept the booking confirmation as a reason for not having a valid NCT. But guaranteeing a poster that he will not be done for it by any Garda is a bit too positive imho.

But to be fair they cant just bring in a new rule that started two weeks after it was announced and expect everyone to immediatly conform, they'll give some leeway surely. Like if my NCT was up lets say the second week of May and was planning on booking it a week or two before (like you used to be able to) then this new rule comes in, everyone clogs up the system and I'm stuck without an NCT for a few months through no fault of my own

It was already an offence to drive without an NCT. Now it attracts (excessive) penalty points!
Anyhow, fair has nothing to do with the law!

The NCT has been around for years and it was always an offence to drive a car that requires an NCT without a valid NCT disc. It was just people being too lazy to get their cars done that has caused this issue. They are the ones that need to be tested as they could be dangerous. Since the NCT is easy enough for most cars to pass there has to be a reason why they didn't send their car in when it was due.

It's a bit of a pain alright that people who obeyed the law are being put in a situation like you say above of having to break the law, but if your car is only out of NCT and you have a booking confirmed you should be OK if stopped. But if the car has never been NCT'd, if it's old enough to require it, then they should do the person for driving without an NCT reguardless of having a booking or not.

If anyone applied within a reasonable amount of time of their NCT due date, say 1 month and were not able to secure a booking for 3 months it is not their problem, its an enforcement problem that led to people not seeing the need to have their car tested which now has led to a panic.

I booked an NCT yesterday, got the 17th Sept. Amended the booking just now to the 28th June. Moral of the story - keep an eye out for cancellations.

My 'baby' is in for the test today. The test centre is 15 miles away. I've sent the misus up with it in case they refuse to let it back on the road. It's a lovely day in Wexford for a walk:D
Nah, it should be OK but I will probably have to go back 'cos of a chip in the windscreen. My attitude is to let them tell me what it needs and get it done then.

issue is i had my car nct'd a mionth early as i do and if i had left it till nearer the date (as the misses does) i'd be wirtjhout one for months (as she is about to be)

she would never be without an nct but now she camnt get a test cert ruins out next week and they're booked till 28th august

You have to go to court for this offence. As long as you can show you did your best to get it NCT'd (booking letter etc.), it is most likely the case will be dismissed. The judge would probably give out to the state for wasting the courts time.

If the NCT system can't cope with the demand, we should not be held responsible.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

And what's the story with the insurance - if something :) happens without the disc, who's the winner?

It is kinda funny to see such delays in getting a NCT test, it tells a lot about all those cars without NCT and their owners rushing to get one since the new law...
Anyway mine is for 19th of Sep too :o but my car 1st registration is April 2009...

I emailed the NCT department in Fonthill (Clondalkin) looking for a test on Friday of last week (15th May) and got a letter from them on Tuesday (19th May) indicating that my test will be on the 29th of May, which is next week.

I don't know if I got exceptionally lucky or what... but there you go.
