Hey! Need some advice right now.
IM 21 unemployed since October last year. I cannot find anything, literally. Applied for a fas course In November That year and im still waiting. I keep getting letter's saying im on a short list and if im still intrested sign the form and send it back....Which iv done 4 times now. Its a very basic course i want..Im sure one starts every other month....Whats there problem? I have me junior but failed my leaving and have no other education.

The thing is now my problems are getting worse than that. I get mood swings from just waking up with nothing to do.sometimes i take it out on people that don need it, but i dont mean it.its just the frustration..I only get 150eur Dole so iv no social life now whatsoever. Iv started smoking cannabis a couple of months ago to try help the mood swings....But i think its worsening my problems. I only talk too a few of me mates now because im ashamed of whats happening to me, I dont really know what to do anymore..HELP!

Smoking that crap isn't going to help, you need to go to your local adult education centre and look at the possiblity of doing your leaving cert with them.

On the mean time look at doing some voltary work, there are bound to be a charity shop near you which could do with someone to give a hand for a few hours. It will get you out of the house, you will meet people, feel like you are giving something back and you will have something new for your c.v. and maybe even get a reference out of it.

You really ought to focus on getting your LC. It will dramatically improve your odds of employment. Not to mention your sense of self accomplishment.

My friend failed the Leaving Cert, but he went to college as a mature student. Because he was unemployed for so long before doing this, he was eligable for the dole and also for a college grant.

He now has an Honours degree and is living in Sydney working for a software company.

He was an alcoholic, and knocked that on the head. Has been dry since he started college.

If he can do it, you can too. The LC isn't worth a ****.

OP -get your ass down to your local adult education center or literacy group or whatever,

Lay of the cannabis and booze if you are feeling depressed.

I have been unemployed since last November, after xmas i was feeling really depressed and was finding it hard to get out of bed, just no motivation to do anything. I started doing meditation, stretching. yoga, weights and running 6 days a week and it really changed me a lot, i feel great. Also did stop smoking dope at the same time after 15 years or so of it.. Id say getting you leaving cert would be a good thing alright, you can do fas courses online, you dont have to wait for them, might be something to look into.. Also if you want to make money think of things you can do like going door to door asking people if they need any gardening done, do it for 5 euro an hour..

Also cannabis will not help mood swings, most likely the opposite and im not really against it as such..

The LC's not the be all and end all but with the way this country's in at the mo it might be a blessing in disguise and a perfect oppurtunity to go back and do it again. After all it'll only take a year or two, but it's up to you.

Meanwhile maybe take up a team sport such as soccer/rugby/GAA to relieve some of the aggression/tension and use it as a reason to get off the ****.

do the lc, learn another language, go running, try go to the gym(depending on your financial circumstances) don't get stuck in a rut.

    I failed my Leaving Cert.......TWICE...

However, I was interested in working in the hotel industry,So I followed the career path there, I worked in bars and went on to qualify as a chef..I changed careers,I went into sales and ended up working for a few different food companies as a rep/consultant in between this I did an evening course in Sales and Marketing.....I've started a totally different role in the food industry and am loving it and am now looking at doing another course for a Batchelor Of Business....
The LC is not the biggest thing we will ever posess in life,It just makes things easier...Believe in yourself and only you know how far you can go!

you really need to take every opportunity you can to get out of the rut and meeting ppl...as has been said, charity work, odd jobs need doing around the house of family members, exercising...leaving cert i would most certainly consider, the probably is you don't just have ppl out of a job who have a leaving cert, you have ppl out of a job that also have diplomas, degrees, masters...so the competition is extremely high even for the jobs requiring little qualifications.
you need to create a positive attitude and i think you can create this yourself if you get involved in something that makes you feel like your moving forward. Education is the way forward in times like this OR if you have an entrepreneurial head on you...creating your own business!

I agree with the end of it, but not the "if he can you can". Everyone is different, people get motivated in differently, different aspects of life cause them to think different. Just because your mate is coming through his problems doesnt mean our mate here can sail the high seas so easily. Aiming that far too early will end up bringing you even more disappointment when you fail to overcome your first obstacle....

Which is again motivation. You need a simple plan to execute over the course of 2 weeks lets say, set your alarm for 7am every morning, go for a 30 minute exercise and return and eat a healthy breakfast. Do not stay up late at night, the time will come when you will be heading to bed and you won't be able to sleep with anxiety, staying up late for no apparent reason is a nightmare from hell waiting to happen, and believe me mate it will eventually. Make yourself up a cv, go to the local bars in the afternoon and hand it in and ask if any spare work is going at all, if not just leave your cv there. Visit the local supermarkets, they might be looking for people to stock the shelves work the tills, again hand in your cv. Don't worry that you have no Leaving Cert and I truly mean that. This day in age it helps yes, but it isn't a lost cause, the fact that you are putting yourself out there will register in the employers mind and will be aware that you aren't ashamed of yourself and that you are willing to work. Do this, don't think about it, just do it.

When you get into a rut, we have all been there, but when you your mind focuses on the program that is running in your head it stays with it, cause thats all it knows at that time but you can change it. Don't think of the consequences of getting up early, don't think sh*t I got all day to do nothing, think of the positive signs, go for a jog, a healthy body provides a healthy mind. Do some gardening, do anything, keep your mind occupied, offer to help out with a local charity or fundraising event. Just keep your mind positive. Do not think dam I'm bored, think the opposite, make things happen. If you get turned down on the first 10 places you visit for a job, don't think that the 11th will too, the 11th could just be the one for you. Don't think you are a waster and from this moment onwards consider yourself a good natured human who was led astray during school. It happens, that's the past, there is nothing you can do about that, but what you can do is determine your future and that lies in your hands. Up early bed early, stay mentally positive, work out twice a day and visit every shop you pass by and ask if they need any help. Use next weeks dole money to buy a ladder and go and offer to wash some windows, your next door neighbour, your next estate, the shops in towm. Summer is coming in, rent out a lawnmover for a few quid a day, visit every house u pass and offer to cut the grass cheaply. Get some money together, a man who works for his money spends it more wisely and appreciates that pint much more cause he earned it.

    I wish you well

This is the Personal Issues of Boards Jokes are not allowed...

You would actually be suprised how easy it is to fail it....Twice..
I just didnt commit myself to it, first time out I failed two subjects and thought I'd go back and do the whole thing again,Failed same two subjects...Thought F€ck It!..
Here I am Now...Working when others that may have more education that I possibly will ever have are at home..
    It's all swings and roundabouts!!

I failed my LC aswell. I managed to get into a VEC doing a FETAC computer science course. I failed my leaving on a mths results so I done night classes after college in maths.

You just got to keep yourself busy, don't give yourself enough time to get moody. A hard days work does you a huge amount of good. It's not all about getting payed. Do something that makes you feel good, volunteer for something. Don't rub your nose in it, work is work and it'll keep you busy!

Don't waste your time smoking that crap either, we all have and I'm sure plenty agree it does nothing but rot your brain and make you lazy.

But yeah, keep busy. I always said work makes the soul strong. And that statement has stood true every day I've come home from a hard day and been chuffed with meself for pulling through.

Could you not lie and say you passed it

I'm working in a recruitment agency. We have a client who requested that people have their leaving cert as one of the requirement..... People lied on their CV's and unfortunately for them, the client also wanted a copy of people's results so they lost out on the job for lying about having passed the LC.

My advice -if you're unemployed - do the LC again. There's not that many jobs out there at the moment so why not use your time to better yourself! Yes, not having a LC isn't the end of the world, but employers have the pick of the crop at the moment with the number of people unemployed so they are going to take people that have all the qualifictations they are looking for instead of taking a chance on someone who has the experience instead of the qualifications.

I read this in the Ducan Bannatyne autobiography that over half the self-made millionaires in the UK left school without any qualifications (ducan included).

You just gotta be smart enough to learn the information as you go along to succeed. Be determined to be successful.
