    Off to Portimao, near Alvor myself next week and have heard it is a great place for families with lovely beaches.

    Have been to old Alcudia in Mallorca and would recommend it.

    alcudia or santa- ponsa in majorca are both really family friendly. lots of cheap family resaurants with kids menus, big supermarkets in the resorts for the self catering, lots of kids activities around the resorts, english speaking doctors/chemists, child friendly bars and hotels and nice safe beaches. the main tourists are families with small kids so everyone is in the same boat.albufaria in portugal on the algarve is the same but very hilly if you have a buggy.
