My doctor has given me a swab pack to get a sample. If I get the sample of pus tonight, do I need to refrigerate until morning? Thanks! I forgot to ask him....

I hate to ask again, but if anyone with a medical background can give me information as to overnight storage, until I can get to the path lab in the morning, I would be very grateful! I don't know whether to refrigerate or leave at room temperature till the morning

    Hi dragona,

This would probably fall under medical advice and is against the forum's charter.

In general samples with the exception of blood cultures should be refrigerated if delayed. However there are a couple of exceptions. Firstly without more information for what the swab is for (please do not provide it) nobody can give you a definite answer and secondly its near lunacy to take any medical advice off the internet.

One possible course of action would be to call your GP. You might get an answering machine with out of hours coverage numbers. You should then be able to call them and get solid proper advice.

Thanks! Apologies if I contravened the rules.
