False negative chlamydia result

I broke up with my boyfriend about a year ago. A couple of months after we broke up he told me he had tested positive for Chlamydia so I got tested but the test came back negative. I've been going out with my new boyfriend for about 5 months now & haven't been using condoms.

But the other day a friend told me a story of how she got a negative chlamydia test result but went for another test because she had symptoms and it came back positive...

So now I'm just a bit worried that it might have been a false negative result for me. Does anyone know if false negative results are common?

..I know the common sense thing to do is to get retested but its really expensive for me especially if i can rely on my last results.
Don't want to pass it onto my new boyfriend if i do have it though.

Thats the first ive ever heard of that, tests for STi's are usually tested and retested as its vitally important for the results to be correct.
Chlamydia is known as the 'silent killer' as its not supposed to have any symptoms AFAIK but I could be wrong.Maybe your mate is telling you porkies but to put your mind at rest go for another one but the chances of two incorrect results is very very very slim.

All sti can take a while to develop in your system after you have been exposed to them.
I would suggest talking to your dr about this and if there is a window of possiblity for this to have happened to you.

But the other day a friend told me a story..

Ah, its not empirical so! She could have slept with someone in between the tests and contracted the infection that way. She may not be telling you the full story. People are unreliable and full of BS !

WHOAH!!!! Chlamydia (the STI) does not KILL anyone! IT may cause infertility in some but you dont die from it!

Not silent killer as in its deadly ,killer as in it eats away at the ovaries and causes other symptoms such as infertility as you mentioned.Maybe 'killer' is a rather agressive term

    Chlamydia, the silent meanie.

OP, the only way you're going to put your mind at ease is if you get tested again.

It doesn't do that either! Bacterial incfections can cause scarring of tissues which can make it difficult for them to perform their functions.

Anyway, I'd say a false negative is unlikely yet possible for a number of reasons.

Seeing as you're a bit worried I'd recommend getting tested again for that reason alone.

Hi, It was a while back but I caught chlamydia from a girl I was seeing. I could give loads of reasons why it happened, bottom line my own faultand bad luck. Young, daft, wrong time wrong place..... you know yourself.
She didnt have any symptoms but I sure as hell did. I think if you did have it you would've definitely passed it on to your boyfriend and I'm sure he would let you know quickly enough if my experience was anything to go by.

That said, you would be better safe than sorry to get retested .... it will put your mind at rest.

So if its passed on to a man would he get symptoms straight away? My boyfriend doesn't have any symptoms.

Think i'll talk to my doc about it anyway just to put my mind at ease.

It's pretty unlikely, but you might as well get yourself tested again just to relieve your worries.

OP you're thinking about this way too much.

If everyone had your worries, they'd need 20 times the STI clinics around the country and labs in particular to deal with all the retesting.

You can't live your life worrying about things that have a ridiculous liklihood such as this.

Yes, I know it's a bit close in that it happened to your friend. But seriously, don't worry.

Given that a person can have chlamydia and not have any symptoms and the damage it can do to a woman's fertility if left untreated, OP go get retested to be sure, your health is not something you should take risks with.

No, virtually nothing to do with the body is that black and white.

It's not that big a deal - just tell your boyfriend. If money is an issue just go to the Guide clinic at St. James Hospital. It's a free walk in service on monday and tuesday mornings. They'll do a full test. The results take a week or two. If you have chhlamydia you'll get the antibiotics for free. There is usually a long queue though so get there early. You'd need to take the morning off work
