Bike storage rights revoked! Any ideas?

    Hi all,
I cycle to work some of the time. When I first started working at the company over a year ago I put my bike in the lobby downstairs but my boss insisted that it was unsightly. He suggested I use a neighbouring companies covered bike racks some distance away but after some debate he "allowed" me to carry it up to our first floor offices and stick it in an out of the way alcove of the lobby.
Now another colleague has decided to take advantage of the work bike tax break legislation. The boss agreed to him but simultaneously informed us that no bikes will be allowed in the building from now on due to "scuffing of the walls" and also it is prohibited in the lease.
He said to me that he will accept any reasonable suggestion I come up with as long as it is at no cost to the company.
Anyone any ideas? I don't want to leave my trusty steed out in the rain every day.

Make your own bike rack and place it in your bosses parking space thus no cost to the company but it will cost you.....

Tell him that you will be unable to cycle to work in that instance, and although it will cost the company nothing financially, you cannot guarantee that you will be on time in the future what with traffic, public transport options etc, and you will most likely be sick and/or stressed more often.

    Or, better still.
Find the cheapest nastiest car or van you can find, prefereably scrap, being sold for parts. Get it transported somehow to the carpark in work. Strip it all out, and use it for bike storage.

Bicycle cover and stand, all in all, less than 60 Euro.
Get a big blue tarp, get weights (bricks) to keep the tarp down. Toss it over the bike.
It is unsightly, but works. I had this for a temp measure for a couple of months. Got a big blue tarp at B&Q. But you can get real cycle covers as well (for twice the price).

What is 'some distance' If you're whining about 200 meters, park in the bike rack of the neighbouring company.

In Ireland you should never leave you're bike uncovered, you never know when it will rain.

Thanks. Very helpful replies. I especially like the idea of parking a beat up old van in the car park and storing the bike there. As for my whining about the neighbouring companies bike racks, the company has since moved. I checked this morning and they took their covered bike racks with them. They were more like 400m away but I have to say the idea of using some other companies facilities because my own employer fails to supply them is a bit backward.
In the end I think the tarp idea is a goer though it will need to be properly fixed to a wall at the side of the building and I will need a solid point to lock bike to. Incidentally the €20 bike stand someone linked to looks flimsier than my bike and it would cost many times more to have it concreted in.
All in all I'll be out of pocket at least a hundred squid for the privilege of locking my bike safely at work. Also I'll need permission for all this.

Lock it to your bosses car. :)

They do sell those big rings you can drill in concrete. Lots of people lock their motor to it.

I'm starting to see the point of the old busted van too.

If you get a van, you could rent storage to the other cyclist too :D

    Your not thinking big:rolleyes:
    • At the next AGM take steps to make your boss look so bad that the board fire him.
    • Apply and get his job
    • Turn the whole compainy around supplying bike spaces for all and tell every one that drives that they can drive if they wish but simultaneously informed them that no cars will be allowed near the building from now on.
Tell them that you will accept any reasonable suggestion they come up with as long as it is at no cost to the company.:D

Hmmm, I say get yourself an extra bike lock and a bottle of rust remover and leave it locked up outside work like the rest of us have to!

Why not just get one of those dead bolt that you can drill into the ground... but it near to a wall then you lock the bike and leave it lean against the wall.. . I don't think they cost that much.

Or even better yet just drill the dead bolt directly into the wall at the right height.
