Single speed hub, broken?

Hopped on my langster this morning, but the pedals just free-wheeled. It was as if the hub was on backwards, if you know what I mean. I could spin the hub with my hand both clockwise and anticlockwise.

Had to flip the wheel and cycle to work in fixie mode, which was grand except for the down hill bits and the sudden stops in traffic.

Do I need a new hub?

You need a new freewheel.

Saw that new freewheel on the CRC website.
Any pointers on removing old and installing new one.
Do I need special tools?
Is it screwed onto the hub or what?

The freewheel just screws onto the hub. You need a special tool to get it off - the particular one depends on which freewheel you have. You can see some here:
