Hope the driver is ok, that could have ripped a leg off or completely impaled him/her.

The car hit the Armco at speed and at a join, the armco popped off and sheared through the car.

    +1
Damaged join I'd say, or a missing section. The whole point of Armco is that the horizontal integrity is maintained; it should certainly hold a Focus at any speed.

I've seen loads of pics like this over on wreckedexotics, sadly most of them say the driver was killed in the accident.
They show pics of inside the car and the barrier goes through the front, through the drivers seat and out the back, so you can guess you the driver ussually dies.
    Terrible way to go.
Just thinking, i've never seen one of these barriers actually helping some one, yet they kill people... hmm

I have seen loads of bashed armco all around the country, and these days more and more that has not been repaired.
When used for a median barrier it is instrumental in saving lives by stopping vehicles crossing over into the oncoming lanes.
Some older posters might remember the 3 strands of wire and a small hedge that used to be in use before concerns about safety were raised, forcing the erection of safety barriers and safety cabling on the central reservation.

Older? Sections of the M1 were wired with that barrier in the past few years; and its used - without a hedge - on "type 2" and "type 3" dual carriageways still.

The older motorways had a hedge and NO barriers; many bits have hedge and one set of wires still. Its only the newer ones that have concrete or Armco.
