Best formatting for Mac and PC

Needing to format an external HDD for use on both Mac and PC (ive got stuff on my mac and i want my friend to see the stuff on his PC).

I know i need to format the drive in MS-DOS for this to work (FAT-32), but now that xHDD are getting big and FAT-32 is rather poor at large sizes.

Also when i try to copy stiff across i get the 'file name too long'.

    Any recommendations?

I know you can get macdrive that allows pc's to see HTFS formatted drives but i dont think my friend is willing to pay the $50 they want.

    NTFS-3G for Mac.

Though you can't search NTFS drives in OSX using Finder (atm).

FAT-32 has a 4gb file-size limit, doesn't it? Took me a while to find a decent NAS that didn't use FAT-32. Are there any downsides to NTFS (apart from Macs needing that plugin)?
