Itunes: all the music keeps disappearing

    Hi,

If this is not the correct forum feel free to move this post.

So, I have a recurring problem with my ITunes. I opened it a moment ago and I just had a blank screen. I went through it and the only music which remained on it is my downloads from Limewire. The thousands of songs from the 'MyItunes' folder were removed.

This has happened many times before and I simply have to 'Add Folder to Library' each time to put the music back. However, I would like to know why this happens as each time I lose my ratings on all my songs, my playlists etc and have to start from scratch. Basically, I am wasting too much time going through this process each time.

What causes this, and how can I prevent it?

    Thanks in anticipation.

Is it syncing with an iPod/iPhone that has no music on it?
Maybe try setting ticking the "manually sync music and video" box.

    Weird!

Thanks, Dades. Actually I hadn't the iPod near the laptop. Itunes had been working fine 20 minutes earlier but when I reopened it there was nothing. I had added songs to it in the previous days from Limewire, but all the Limewire songs were still there; my own music had been removed.

If I knew what caused it I could prevent it.

Hmmm. You haven't moved any of your music files around the hard drive, or maybe you're using some software that might have re-catagorised them?

I dont think that would casue this issue as itunes still keeps a reference to the files but if you tried to use them then would have a problem

I have just got a new Vista laptop and this keeps happening to me as well. This morning all my songs were happily available when I opened i-tunes. When I logged back in 1 hour later - nothing. This has happened 3 times now and each time I have to import into i-tunes again but at the loss of playlists, etc.
What a pain. Has anyone got a solution.
I had no problems previosuly with my last XP Desktop.

Just found this fix on another forum. Am going to try it tonight. Others say it works.

the itunes has a conflict with sony vaio music software
    which doesnt like itunes.
    to fix this

ctrl alt del to go tto ask manager
    select services/services/
    select vaio content folder watcher
right click/properties/ change it from automatic to manual
    right click/stop
    this should resolve the problem.

OK. I will try that, James. I'm at my wits end with this. Five months after my initial post here the same thing has just happened again. I do have a Sony Vaio and I am using Vista. Nevertheless, it used to happen every few months on my Dell desktop.

I downloaded the latest ITunes (version 9) three days ago and all the music disappeared from ITunes when I reopened it. I put it back in again by doing the 'Add Folder' option and it was all in there again within 10 minutes. However, and this is the thing that really pisses me off, I have once again lost all my ratings on thousands of songs as well as my compilations.

I hate not understanding why ITunes is doing this.

This can happen as well if you have your music located on an external drive. Itunes sometimes loses the location and resets the library location to the default.

In my case, I keep my music on the time capsule. I have to make sure that the macbook is fully connected to the TC before starting Itunes otherwise it loses everything.
