I would point you in the direction of the Nikon D60, great value at 379 sterling.

The best one is the one you can afford and that you like.

Browse the FAQ sticky and see the recommendations.

Canon and Nikon would be the most popular (in that order). After that, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, etc.

Remember that you're buying a system/brand rather than an individual camera, since you are likely to buy more and more lenses, and then upgrade the camera body.

Go browse different places, but then go to a shop and feel the camera in your hands before you order. Some feel better than others.

All the beginner slrs are much of a muchness.....

Although you can say your buying into system there all much of a muchness too. Unless you want huge massive telephotos or tilt shift lenses any of the systems that paul outlined will do...

I have heard that the Sony range is quite good. It is definitely in third place behing the big two.

If you are considering getting into photography seriously I would steer you towards Nikon or Canon (in any order) as they will have the support & range of lenses/accessories. These things do change as when I was first into photography the big two then were Nikon & Olympus.

Whatever you do get, then learn how to use it so you can forget about gear & concentrate more on the image, which is the most important thing anyway.

my first slr was a minolta from the 70's. i learned so much using film that i never would have understood if i went straight to digital. film is a good place to start and they are cheap.

I have it and would recomend it. There really good for a beginner as the controlls are nice and simple, and you can advance to the manual modes when your ready!
Try warehouse express for good prices, there 298 sterling there

A year ago i would have totally agreed with you.... But since then the've introduced pro zeiss and 'g' lenses from 16mm to 400mm. Pretty much the range that would be in the avarage shooters kit. Whats missing is a 600mm and 800mm glass (something like the old minolta 600 f4 would be nice and hopefully by the time i can afford one they'll be there), a ringflash and a cheap 85mm f1.8 but they'll come as the userbase increases. The cheap fifty and flash (a la sb400) were introduced last week.

Scrubs i'll post a pic or two that i took with it to show you what it can do....
