cycling training

    i do a few cycles during the week, usually a 55 miler which is my long cycle and then usually 20 -25 miles, sometimes an 18 mile. on the shorter cycles if i am on my own i like to really push myself hard. and although not on all off the cycle but on most of it i push hard and sometimes try to beat times to push myself. but then i cycle sometimes with a couple of other guys on the shorter cycles and they tell me that i should just keep a normal pace and not push hard. but i feel that maybe i am not improving as much when i don't push myself hard? what do you think?

    Pushing yourself hard will give you the power for race speed alright. However longer cycles at a more steady speed will provide a good base to work on and help develop your endurance. There is nothing wrong with going hard. I one met a talented who said to me that when he goes out training, he doesn't follow any programme, he just kills himself (with the effort that is) and comes home. Simple as that! :D

    yeah that is what i like to do, on the longer cycles i cannot go all out as i could be wrecked at the half way point,so i just keep a steady speed. but on the shorter cycles i am at a stage now were i feel i am fit enough to kill myself as you say. and when just going steady on the shorter distances i feel no stress at all.
