I've been very impressed by the Ase Ultra, very compact and quiet.

I have the ASE Ultra on my tikka T3 Tactical great piece of kit, quiter than the T-8 and theres a better balance on the gun.

(tested against mates T8 with sound detector I borrow from a Health & Safey Rep)

mine is .223 with 20". i chose the shorter one for handeling reasons, they say there should be no differance in accurecy, i'll let you know how it gets on.

If anything it should be marginally accurate, because it would be a slightly stiffer barrel.

Just to add to this post on the ASE Ultra mods. They now make the Ultra Nightstar, new to the market. It's a S5 (about €400) over barrel type mod but with a reduced front length. Price here would be about €300 dependent on the UK exchange rate.
Look at jackson rifles web site for more details. http://www.jacksonrifles.com/ click on 'download all mod data sheets' and open the ASE abode file

I think John Lambert has a couple in stock in 1/2" UNF and 14mm x 1 @€;300. I'm waiting on one in 5/8" x 17 to come in from another dealer not available until late June.

I phoned John up yesterday looking for an Ultra Nightstar in 5/8" x 17 but he said he didn't have any in stock. He has the 1/2" unf and 14mm x 1.

But Jim if you know better than this PM me please.

I have a t8 on mine since i got it new back in 06 and its makes a good reduction in sound but is starting to rust a bit now im fairly interested in the new ultra nightstar it being stainless it should last much longer than a t8.

I got the ASE Northstar mod in .30 cal 5/8" thread (for my 308) last week @€;290 and the CZ Varmint 223 threaded on Friday @€;60.

Shot my first fox on Saturday night with the 223 @140y and I can highly recomend this mod to everyone. It's very quite and reduces the recoil. Photo's of the CZ and mod to follow.

fair play, i was using my 6.5x55 till now, it does a fine job on the boys. looking forward to getting a shot off at a fox with .223, it has taken out a few bunny's so far. i started using a wolf 55 grain fmj, cos they only cost €10 for a box of 20, i'v not tested them out past 100 m yet, i'm waiting for a shipment of 55 grain hornady blastic tips to come in, i hear they are the job. what do you use

I use 40gr federal ballistic tips in my tactical. Don't like the hornady stuff as I can't get non moly coated rounds. I used acetone to clean the hornady rounds that I used before, but I don't believe in the moly coated stuff when non moly ammo shoots as well if not better. 50gr HP american eagle is mighty stuff to 200 yds, then the ballistic tips take over.

<runs and hides before moly vs. non moly argument starts!>

I found I couldn't chamber the wolf ammo in the CZ Varmint. I found the best ammo is Federal V-Shok @40gr or the 55gr but the 40gr is faster @3700fps both @€;28/box. Best group with the 40gr was 28mm @300m and touching groups @100 BUT not all the time I'm sorry to say.

But after fitting the new mod the American Eagle HP are shooting better than ever before so I'll get some more to try out.

I agree with Jonty about the Hornady V-Max stuff as I can't get non moly coated rounds as well so I won't use them.

Not a fan of moly either :o

find the moly coated stuff very erratic ,was told that ya need to fire 10 to 15 rounds to line the barrel with the moly and then the groups will tighten up

Your CZ varmint is a 1-9 twist Clive isn't it? Kinda puts to rest the old "tight twist .223s can't fire light ammo" story!!

I put a LOT of 50-63gr rounds down the tube (over 200) before my friend D said he uses the Federal V-Shok BT 40gr in his CZ varmint 1-9 twist. What a difference it made, groups got tighter. I used these on the Midlands fox shoot and they did the job well.

@3700fps they are down the range before you know you even pulled the trigger.:D
Agian people say the lighter rounds are affected by the wind more but at that speed they are not in the wind for very long. Think about it.

And as I say after fitting the new ASE Northstar mod the American Eagle 50gr HP are shooting better than ever before and only €14/box :)

Just brought some RWS 55gr SP to try out but very dear @€;28.50/box, I don't think I'll be using many of these.

i bought the t8 mod for my tika , huge differance , and i also find the anerican eagle 55g very good . but i had to try the very expencive remington acutip 55g @ €32 per box , very accurate and leathol but too pricey

i found the american eagle good out to 200 yards, after that they tend to go astray

I'm using Hornady V-max 40 grain moly coated. Shoots OK for me, used to shoot better before I installed the Jewell trigger but I may have botched that job, must investigate further next week :D
