Finishing up in college in a few weeks. Thinking of going away for a few days on piss up in one of the European cities. Love to do another J1 but money isn't as plentyful as it used to be!

Most of us haven't been to Germany before, we're thinking of going to Munich or Berlin. We'd like to have a look around during the day also, and these seem like nice spots.

Anyone have any experience with these cities, or could possibly suggest some alternatives further East? Probably the same experience only cheaper.

Berlin is cheaper than Munich. You probably won´t get much cheaper even if you go further east. Both are nice cities.

the food and drink in Berlin is cheap, accomodation can be expensive even in hostels, maybe 20 quid a night, but if you hunt around you can get as cheap as 10 per night, might be a hard find though. Berlin is brilliant plenty to do there during the days. Go on a free walking tour once or twice (or three times like me) if you want to learn your away around the city or are looking for somewhere to go and don't know where it is(and sometimes get a better tour/learn new things from different guides).
there's another free tour, alternative tours berlin, it seems www.newberlintours.com ripped of the alternative tour and started charging for it, so do the free one:
    http://www.alternativeberlin.com/Home.html
again, a good tour, these guys work off tips and sometimes go the extra mile (extra 3 hours in our case) just to make sure he got a tip, but was a great tour showing off how artsy Berlin is.

you can also do paid tours, i did the Sachsenhausen one and the third reich one. I wouldnd go to Sachenhausen without a tour guide as its cheap and the info they give you is well worth it, i wouldnd bother doiong the third reich one again, it was mostly repitition of details in the free walking tour/sachsenhausen tour.

I'm sure theres more to Berlin than tours, it's just all i could find in my short time there and were great fun and easy way of exploring the city.

dont cross the road without waiting for the little green ampleman! otherwise you can get done for jaywalking

Only negative thing I would say about Munich is that the Bavarian women were not the most attractive when I was there. But their English is great. Plus the beer anywhere in Germany is the best you will find. Dusseldorf is probably my next destination when going to Germany.

Are you thinking of renting a car? If so then I would reccommend a small town of Heidelberg. It is a University town and the nightlife is really good even during the week. Accomadation can be found cheaply as well although there are a couple of hotels that a pricey.
You would need to fly to Frankfurt and drive but you get to go on the autoband too!

I have been to Munich, Berlin and Hamburg. If money was tight I would go to Hamburg as Berlin is expensive.

If you have a few quid then Munich would be my numebr one choice. If you can go when the Dachau Fest is on then you should go to that. Cheap beer and reat craic.

Nice one lads. Hamburg isn't one I had considered. I'd say we wouldn't bother hiring a car, so Heidelburg would probably have to be given a miss.

For those of you who've visited the German cities, is there anyone who has visited one and wouldn't go back?

Any reason why you want to go to Germany?
I have been to Stuttgart and Frankfurt and didn't like either.
You can't beat Munich if its a drinking session you want - Hofbrauhaus, Englischer Garten (Chinese Tower), Lowenbrau Keller - all class beer joints.
Schiller Cafe - Open 23 hours a day...
Day Trip to Andechs - Strongest beer in Munich..

I'm originally from a place near Hamburg and I think it is one of the nicest cities in Germany. I don't like Berlin, don't really know why but it's just something about it I don't like (but that's just my opinion). Cologne is even nicer than Hamburg, lots of nice places to eat and drink along the river, really nice atmosphere. Really nice and crazy people living there:D Will definately visit Cologne again some time.

Interested in Germany as it looks like a nice country, most of us haven't been there yet, and we really love beering!

Munich seems like a good option, I haven't heard many bad reports. I'll have to get a few books out of the travel agents!
