Cheap, quiet week long sun holiday

Hoping to get away for a week this summer to the sun. Will just be me and my boyfriend so looking for somewhere quiet (but not dead!), preferably with self catering accommodation and ideally commutable from an airport to avoid car hire. Have been looking into Spain, Italy, France and Portugal but having trouble knowing where to start in these countries as haven't been to Europe since holidays with my parents as a kid!

Can anyone recommend somewhere to start looking (area/town/accommodation)? On a bit of a tight budget too.

    Thanks

Donegal would be nice but the very small chance of good weather would put me off. Thanks though.

Love the old town of Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote. Plenty of self cater accom that you can book directly through the landlord (have done it myself), 10 mins from arrecife airport, about 15 euro i think in a taxi. The old town itself is quiet for daytime lounging but the marina is close for lunches and cafes, and its only a short walk to the main strip of the new town where you can stay out as long as you like. Best restaurants are in the old town too and really well priced. Rent a car and explore the island, really interesting and far more to do than any of the other canary islands in my opinion.

Sorry to butt in on this thread, just curious on one thing - is the marina in Lanzarotte in the old or new town? And is the old town Puerto Del Carmen and the new town Playa Blanca?

    sorry, two questions!

puerto del carmen has two part ,the old town where the marina is and the new town. playa blanca is a diff town at the south of the island.

would also 2nd lanzarote we liked matagorda only 5min transfer from airport

Dubrovnik is great, super weather, nice scenery, very little in the way of piss heads. Airport is 10/15 mins away from the city center

Beaches are not sandy though and the flights tend to be pricey but foot accom is cheap enough if you shop around

Also lots to do there if you get bored with the place, day trips to the islands/montenegro/mostar/sarajevo etc etc

In Spain if you go East of Malaga its quiet/cheap and has reasonable beaches too, if you go west its pretty mental

La Rochelle in France is also supposed to be decent enough and is close to the airport and quiet.

I would second Croatia, it's a gorgeous country. I know you said you didn't want to hire a car, but there's so much to see in Croatia I'd recommend it. You can fly into Zadar with Ryanair or Dubrovnik with Aer Lingus, both from Dublin.

The nice thing about Croatia is that you can arrive in a place, go to their tourist office and ask for a room for the night. These tend to be cheap (€15ish per person, often cheaper). These will often be part of a family home, though you can get apartments too. The longer you stay, the cheaper it will be and you're free to negotiate. If you don't want to go to the tourist office, there'll be lots of people around the bus stops, town centres etc. with posters advertising their properties. This is the cheapest way to find accommodation in my opinion, plus it affords you the flexibility of being able to visit a few different places without being tied to one base.

Have you been to Playa de los Pacillos? What's it like?
