Quick question, does anyone know, if I hire a car from Hertz in Ireland, am I insured and permitted to drive it in the UK, including Northern Ireland?

I've checked the Hertz website and found nothing. I've sent them an email and waiting on a reply.

AFAIK, Hertz have a clause that states you can't bring their cars on a ferry, which would mean there's no way you could take it to the UK.

The above is true however Hertz UK WILL allow you bring vehicles to Ireland.

You may take your vehicle to Northern Ireland.

I hired a car in Paris from Sixt and it was German. I asked about this and was told it was because ANY EU car may be driven on the continent. Excluded Irish vehicles though. Possibly down to the VRT.

Thanks for the input lads, but I actually found the info on the Hertz.ie website:
Hertz vehicles may be driven into Northern Ireland with no restrictions.

Hertz vehicles may be driven into the U.K. but not into other countries.
If driving into the U.K., you must purchase an AA 5-star cover at any AA office prior to the departure to the U.K. and inform the Hertz counter upon your arrival.

Please refer to "London Congestion Charging" in the United Kingdom's index if you intend to drive in or to drop the vehicle off in Central London.

Should these restrictions be ignored all insurance (Third Party Liability, CDW, TP, PAI), if accepted, shall be deemed, null and void.
The driver will be held fully responsible in case of accidents and will bear all consequences, including the cost of repatriation of the damaged vehicle.

For further information please contact your Reservation Centre.

    AA 5-star cover costs €54.00.
