I'm a frequent user of both Dublin and Cork airports and I recently had surgery on a broken ankle and had metal inserted.

Will there be any complications at these airports or will I require a letter from my doctor?

Don't think you'll need a letter, but that's not to say it might not be useful. Let the security folks know though before going through - you may get the pat down if it does trigger alerts :)

I had a metal plate, 1 screw and 5 pins inserted into my ankle a few years back but have never had issues going through metal detectors. You could always show the scar if it does happen to go off!

I have 2 dozen screws in my ankle, but they dont set of most modern detectors as they can tell the difference in density between implants and steel, besides, they can just wave the wand over you to ensure the reading is coming from your ankle. its not a problem

There will be little security effort shown in Cork.

As mentioned previously I tried and tried to declare and even show them a syringe I was carrying and they didnt want to see it or see any doctors letter.

"If it shows up on the computer then it shows up" and.......................it didnt. Madness!!

Im sure all that will happen is they will wand you, you will pull up your pants to show your bare skin and off you go. I bet they will think there is an issue with the handhelds.

13 years ago in Shannon they were caught red faced because they had the hand helds turned off and were pretending to wand people. A private investigator nabbed them.

Really? That sounds mad, got a link? Why would they bother turning off the wands!? To save on batteries?

    Laziness I imagine.

A guy working there was working with me in the Red Cross and told me he got scalded that day because of it.

    So no linky Im afraid.

i've got a lot of metal in my leg and beep every single time, so have to be patted down and scanned everytime. the only advantage i that i tell them when going through and don't need to take shoes and belt off as i'll beep anyway

An uncle of mine has a metal valve in his heart and he actually ticks like a watch:pac: Anyway he went to the United States (NY-JFK) and got no trouble where security is alot lot stricter. The Irish European security is laughable compared to the US. He took a letter from his doctor to be on the safe side but didn't need to show it.

I got randomly chosen to go through the full body scanner in Las Vegas last year which checks for practically everything and also "smells" for Narcotics and Explosives. I lit the bloody thing like a Christmas Tree as I had elements of Gun Powder in my T-Shirt as I had spent half the day previously shooting in the Desert. It took a little explaining on my side and for my troubles I won a full carryon search cue the TSA officer going through my personal effects which was a bit embarrassing.

I rose a flag in the system for presscreening as I paid for my ticket at the desk after cancelling my original flight and buying a new one to NY instead of LAS-JFK-SNN, even though I was going to NY anyway they wouldn't let me get off there as I was bound for Ireland. Sorry for going OT I just wanted to put my experience in perspective.
