Provisional name driver

I have just been on the phone to my Insurance broker asking them how much it would be to add my wife to my insurance. She has just got her provisional licence.

My broker told me that the insurance company, St Pauls Travellers, wanted an extra €207 until renewal in December.

I had already checked with 123.ie and get this....

They use St Pauls Travellers and they were only quoting €60 on top for a years insurance.

Welcome to the world of variable insurance quotes.;) As you've found out, it always pays to shop around.

That's the annoying thing Anan1. I do shop around and my current insurance broker was cheapest for me last renewal.
They obviously know that I probably won't argue the case, as it would mean me cancelling my insurance with them and losing out money. I was tempted to do it just to spite them, but have decided to spend the extra quoted on driving lessons for her and then when the time comes I can tell them where to go. Assuming of course they aren't the cheapest at the time, but somehow I guess they won't be.

Different companies weight things in different ways unfortunately, some will load for a named driver on a provvy, some won't.

It 's not unusual for companies to start with a loss leader like this either, a good way of tempting those with a nice clean record over without exposing themselves too much.

Are you sure you are comparing like with like?

The 123.ie quote system assumes new business.

    How do you mean?

I used the same set of details for 123.ie that my broker had.

Did you get a quote for a new policy?

I wouldn't give up straight away. First off, call your broker and tell them what 123.ie quoted. Threaten to cancel and they might match the quote. I'd also call St Pauls directly and see if you can add the driver - they may require that you go through your broker, but if you get the right person and give the right story they may just do it for you over the phone. This may not work, but it is worth a try.

    With 123.ie I did.

I suppose that they are trying to get me to swap over to them, but would they put up the premium when renewal was due?

I already mentioned the 123.ie quote to my broker, when they told me how much their charge was. I had also contacted St Pauls and they will not deal on a person to person basis, have to use a broker. May try again though and see if I can get a more apathetic person.

St Pauls Travelers don't deal directly with the public for any class of business.
My advice is for you to print out the 123.ie quote and show it to your broker. Ask them to cast an eye over it to see if you have somehow entered different details to what they have. It could be something like protected NCB, value of vehicle, cc of vehicle etc
