Just built my new bike at the weekend. Put a SRAM rival cassette onto a mavic kysirum wheel but the cogs appear a little loose. Move side to side a tiny bit. Am i missing/ do i need to get a spaces? Should this happen? Gearing is indexing fine but making a bit of a rattle?? Have been riding fixed for 2 years so am out of touch with what a real bike should sound like.

There should be no movement in the cassette what so ever ... It should be tight on the wheel ..

I usually find that the smallest cog can be a bit of a hassle to align properly as it sort of sits on top of the freewheel rather than slide completely into it ... so just make sure you have that aligned properly.

Also, is the lock ring gone on ok .. or is it askew ...

Did you put all the spacers in between all the cogs ... the smaller ones are moulded into the cog itself .. but for the bigger cogs, there are spacers ... did you drop any of them.

Lastly, not sure if this will make a difference or not ... but the cog should go on with the side with the no. of tooth stamped on it facing outside. Else on the SRAM ones atleast, shifting will be crap

Thanks. Did all of that. The biggest 3 cogs came moulded together and spacers with the middle ones, and then the smallest with spacers built in. There isnt enough room to fit another metal spacer but the cassette def isnt tight. The lockring is on properly but will tighten more this evening. Can you buy spacers?

Is the cassette body Shimano/SRAM .. or is it a Campy ...

I had this problem with a sram casette also. I solved it by fitting a 1mm washer on the insideof the casette. The washer came with the casette. I originally assumed that the washer should be put on the outside but it didn't sit properly with the lockring (11t) but when fitted to the inside it worked. If you built the bike yourself you may have to fit other washers to the drive side of the bottom bracket to ensure acceptable chain alignment.

Ebay or LBS for washers cheap.

I've seen on some mavic wheels with some cassettes there is a small extra spacer required that goes on between the freewheel body and the casette. It's only maybe 2mm wide but it's only purpose is to stop that play in the cassette. I think I *might* have one floating around - I'll check this evening and PM if I can help you out.
