The Ramen Girl

I quite enjoyed this movie, almost all shot in Tokyo...Brittany Murphy stars with an almost all Japanese cast and crew with an American director.

I'd say it's 50/50 Japanese/American dialogue.....the Japanese dialogue has subtitles but it's clear to read and also there is plenty of time to read the subtitles on screen and dosen't distract from the movie.

It's basically about an American girl in Japan who gets dumped by her BF, unhappy in her life and direction she decides to become a Ramen chef at a traditional Japanese Ramen house.

The main Japanese actor was very good and had good dialogue and quite funny in parts. What i liked is the kinda culture clash, you have Japanese actors speaking there native tongue and this American girl (mostly) not having a clue what they are saying, they don't create some BS either whereby she learns fluent Japanese in the first 20 mins....in fact a year passes in the movie and she still only has a bare grasp of the language.

She more understands by body language and the scant English words her teacher picks up, It sounds like Simply Irresbiable and Lost In Translation dosen't it?

Well, kinda....but they interplay between Murphy and her Japanese teacher is great and overall i thought it was very watchable and certainly underrated...it went straight to DVD and apparently a hit in Japan.

    3.5/5
