How much tread is left on each tyre?

They're is a thread depth indicator that the NCT usually give out, I'm not too sure where you can find them though.

Bad luck tbh, but as Anan said, how much thread left? Any pics?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

I thought they could only check the items the car failed on? Could be wrong on this though.

I dunno about spraying the tyres green, i'd be inclined to have a little word with his boss, seems a bit ott...can they do that?

I assume he means they marked the sidewall. If theres a bulge or anythign in the tyre they put a ring around the bulge.

If the tyres are not legal then I'm sure they mark hem too.

    +1

Also she could ask for an explanation why it passed 2 weeks earlier with the same tyres on it....

I remember I got paint on my tyres before (paint can side of the road). I was amazed at how well petrol took the paint off without leaving anything behind...Oh sorry, that was very OT ;)

OP, if the tyres are ok, then challenge it. If not, get them replaced. They are 4 rubber circles that keep you on the road. Its better to be safe with them.

Havent seen the car to check the treads, just going on what the missus has told me, my mate says they cant retest on the stuff you passed within 28 days:confused:

Well wouldn't that make the test sort of pointless? If the car isn't in a roadworthy condition, how can they pass it?

A relation of mine put his old car through the NCT a couple of years back and failed on something or another and when it got re tested, it failed on suspension, he wrote to the NCT place saying why wasn't this pointed out the first time as he would of gotten it fixed, they ended up giving him another free retest

Aye, but checking tyres should be a free visual retest either way.

Dont think so, the feckers will charge for the use of the ramp. But the thing I don't get is, if you fail on a visual, like wipers say, you don't have to put it through a full test again, but if you fail on something else they give it another full test?! I know its half price but still, if the bits were good enough to pass 28 days ago (and wouldn't need to be checked again for 2 years) why do they check everything again?!

Forgetting about the test for a minute, does your girlfriend's sister really want to be driving around on bald tyres?

I understand what your saying about bald tyres, but all i wanted to know was can they retest you on the stuff she passed 2 wks earlier

AFAIK if they spot something during a retest that would fail, then they can fail you for that on the retest. So they're not going to go through the car again but may notice something while doing the retest that would prevent them from issuing a cert for the car based on what they saw.
