Slimmer PS3 at E3

    Hi,

Does anyone think Sony will announce a slimmer model of the PS3 at E3?
A lot of people are saying that they will, but the PS2 got slimmed down a lot later after its launch.

Sony are denying it, but they don't exactly have a good reputation. They denied a price cut of the PS3 for months, then one day, they decided to announce a price cut.

I don't mind, since the only time I will buy a slimmer model, is when my current model brakes, but its nice to think Sony are announcing something big.

Sony did indeed deny it, but they do tend to deny things alot :p

I'm happy with my big, beefy, fat PS3. It's a powerhouse through and through!

I agree fully, consoles are like a family:

    PS3: Dad
    360: Mom
    Wii: Kid

    It all fits, doesn't it?

Didn't they deny the PSP-3000 even when pics surfaced?

God chance they're working on a new ps3 model but doesn't neccessary mean its that design in those pics or soon

Most of those PSP-3000 pics were made by people who heard the rumor, the same with the slim PS3. Speaking of PSP rumors, what about the rumored PSP2? Sliding screen, 16GB internal memory and a second analog stick. Nice!

    it looks fake

but the picture quality isnt the greatest tbh

you'd think sony would wait until they make a profit from the ps3 for a slim version to come out

I thought that too but theres a few things about it that makes me thing it could be real(especially the box).

Or cutting down on the raw materials could be the final thing needed to push it into profitability

It does look fake but i'd like a slimmer ps3 myself.

If they were to launch a slim PS3, I'd wonder if they'd make cutbacks on the hardware too, to make it cheaper. Maybe remove the onboard wifi for example?

Putting all the pictures together here is an approximation of what the new slim PS3 will look like:

I don't see how they would get all the kit into that, they'll have to get rid of a lot of it to fit it in:rolleyes::(

Well half the insides are taken up by the fan at the moment so if they have smaller chips and it produces less heat they can use a smaller fan and maybe switch to an external power brick

Looks like someone is a bit miffed at the pics surfacing on the web.

The exclusion of the external power brick is one of the PS3s biggest physical selling point. To quote an old saying, though:

"Ya gotta do what ya gotta do."

Oh yeah, that whole "letter from the lawyer" link above is very fishy. Private images from their clients (a la Sony). Ha, maybe this is true, who knows!

I don't think it would be wise to release a slimmer version.

Back in the days of the PS2, when you wanted to buy a slimmer console, you went out, bought it and stuck in your memory card.

If someone with a big games collection wants a slimmer one, they have to switch all of their saves onto a flash drive, copy them onto the PS3 and lay them. Also, there may be films, music collections, anything.

Then there's the whole problem of re-installing every game onto the new PS3 of your memory stick doesn't have enough space. Theres the option of switching the hard drive, but the new one might be a different size to fit it all in.

Its more of a problem than anything IMO.

    I won't be switching anyways.

I don't think they are aiming for the market that switches consoles when a slimmer version is out, thats a tiny market. I think they are going for the market that has largely ignored the PS3 because it was too big, too expensive and had too many features that the majority of people didn't need. I predict a new PS3 slim with externel PSU and a load of features dropped and a price drop. MS won't be able to counter that becuase their console is already the cheapest on the market.

As retro said I doubt this is the market theyre aiming for but why not just switch hard-drives or do a back up to external and restore. Youve just described the most long-winded process ever:confused:

It would explain why Sony have been so reluctant in cutting the price. Why cut the price of the uber model when you can get the bare essentials for the same price as an xbox(ish).

Yeah that's what I thought. I mean the PS3 has a one-click full backup option - your saves (PS1, PS2 and PS3), game data, users, photos, videos, themes - the whole shebang. I can't remember if it saves your messages though. Sure you require a large enough removable HDD, but who doesn't have a big enough one these days, or a mate with one they could borrow?
