does anyone know how to go about finding a manager for a band? we're an Irish band based in Dublin and we've been going for a while ourselves but we really don't know much about the music industry to be honest and we need some guidance. is there any good places to look for managers or are there any places at all? thats how confused we are...

    Hey there,

Well, to be honest, there isn't a big shop to pick and choose managers on display, as such. You should keep your eyes peeled for management companies -- there's loads out there.

Speaking as a manager, it's generally best to find somebody who's familiar with the style of music you play, because they will be making a lot of decisions for you, as well as promoting you and getting you gigs.

But do look around!! Maybe try the Golden Pages, there might be some listed in there, I don't know! :)

    Hopefully this helps.

Bear in mind that the manager works for the band & not the other way around

EDIT: just listened to your song "Big Ole D". Sounded great until 4:40. didn't like that bit at all, but the rest of it (with a little more production) sounds like a great summer song

Management is a thankless task and no matter how much industry knowledge the manager has, there`ll always be some asswipe in the band who thinks he knows more. That`s just one of many reasons why so few people enter management...

It's a very cold hearted way of putting it, I would think. We're not all bad! In fact, it is a very difficult job, but, yes, the manager is expendable! I have never thought that the band I manage works for me, though. I always looked at it as a team thing, you know. Everyone should be doing their part, and just because you have a manager doesn't mean that nobody has to pull their weight!

You know, songhound, that's a brilliant summation of the life of a manager. You are right, the members generally like to think that the manager is out to get them and doesn't know what they are doing!
