i have a 1984 vw t25 1.6 diesel which left me down yesterday.i was driving for around 25 min when the temp gague went straight to the top. i pulled over , turned off engine and got out to a cloud of steam. a pipe from the filler tank to the expansion tank had frayed/melted against the alternator. luckily i had a spare length of pipe and replaced it.i filled the filler tank to full with a bottle of ballygowen and drove away only for the temp gague to rise to the top again but without the cloud of steam.the thing is that both the filler tank and the expansion tank were still full. any ideas?

I would suspect that either your thermostat isn't fully opening or something else (like malfunctioning water pump/blocked pipes) is preventing the big coolant cycle from becoming effective.

So the coolant is only cycling round the small circuit, overheating pretty quickly.

Thermostat would be first port of call.

My guess is there is air in the system,Have a look for a bleed nipple somewhere on the cooling syatem,Maybe on top of the rad or where the heater rad pipes meet the bulkhead, failing that run the engine with the interior heater in the hot position and the expansion tank cap off and see if you can see any bubbles coming from the expansion bottle.

    I'm with artic
take the cap of the radiator and fill it
Then repeatably squeeze the top hose feeding the radiator to expel the air

Cooling system on a T25 is a bit different than on other cars, what with the engine in the back and the radiator up front.

The pipe that burst on the OP's car isn't really involved in the coolant flow (unless it splits) as it only serves as a connection between the two tanks (expansion and filler).

There may now well be air in the system, but I doubt that this was the cause of the failure.

OP let the engine run on idle for a good while (can take up to 20-30 mins) and check if the pipes to the front and the radiator are getting hot at all. If not, the thermostat not opening is the most likely culprit
