If selling gizmos you will have to beat the likes of www.dealextreme.com

Perhaps look at more genuine Chinese / ethnic stuff

Some of the stuff on there is really, really bad quality though. Still, can't beat .99c headphones with free shipping.
    yes it's mostly cheap crap

but extremely cheap when you take into account the free postage

Why would someone in Europe pay the middle man when they can just get it straight from eBay for the same price/lower?
    For the reason you gave

And if you stick them on eBay, since your in Ireland people will more likely buy from you instead of buying from the masses of Chinese sellers, who mainly sell fakes & take 4 years for them to arrive;)
Many hong kong sellers advertise on ebay.co.uk with the intention of appearing as UK based sellers. People fear both fakes AND customs from outside the EU.

Quality is always a huge issue. A member here runs www.irish-lifitng.com which import gym equipment from China. Now there is only so much that can go wrong with a hunk of steel, also it does not go obsolete. I am often shocked at the prices Chinese ebay sellers can sell at, thinking "how do they make a living", I would want to be making twice the profit on stuff that their asking price is. Of course the cost of living is much lower in China so they can survive on the apparently little profit.

I use dealextreme, they are fairly upfront about crap quality and have reviews of products. It might be fake but at least you know it will work and a fake 8GB card on DX usually will be 8GB, on ebay it is often half that. They do take returns too.

I think unimportant items that would sell in a market stall would do well, by unimportant I mean quality is not critical. Stuff like those bands kids wear, like the Lance Armstrong bands, if it breaks big deal.

All that put aside though, i'd look into memory cards/memory sticks if you can get a genuine supplier that isn't selling fakes you could make some money over here from it, as the prices are just a rip off.

Guess you must've had unpleasant experience of dealing with suppliers in China.Sorry about that. But this is happening everywhere, everyday,Chinese suppliers also are sometimes cheated by buyers from outside. The point is we ought to build up trust day by day, little by little.
As far as memeory cards/memory sticks are concerned, there is no problem to find a genuine supplier,I'd like to take care of quality,if we really want to do this business.

The perception of many here is that China is by far the biggest source of fake consumer goods. As a new start you would have to have very very low margins to start off with and an extremely good returns policy.

That's why I suggested ethnic stuff, it doesn't do anything so can't be faulty, you can't buy it locally in shops, even better if not mass produced.

Think of the stuff you miss most from home or useful stuff we don't have here.
For example try buying a kettle in a non-tourist area of Southern Europe

I would suggest not posting the same thread in multiple categories for a start ;)
