Ian Whitten has just been called up to the ireland squad to tour Canada and America. Now.... why the hell does an unproven academy player get called into the national side over Fionn Carr? I just dont understand the logic, they are both young players, both backs yet Carr scores more tries and would significantly enhance the attacking threat on the wing compared to the players there already (Dowling and possibly Murphy and Hurley) also there is ample back up at center already. Is there some kind of unspoken cap on the amount of connacht players allowed into an ireland squad?

Because Whitten is a centre , would be my guess.

Whitten is there instead of Paddy Wallace, so Carr wouldn't really be the logical replacement. Carr should be there ahead of Hurely however.

Did O'Driscoll play for Ireland before Leinster?

Yep. He also didn't make the first team when he played SCT (I think, could be wrong there).

Edit - now that I think of it, maybe it was he didn't make the first team when he was in 5th year or something. He was definitely on the bench for an SCT final.

/pointless information that nobody asked for.

Jeez, why Carr isn't there is a joke although I haven't seen a lot of Whitten tbh.

Denis Hurley for Ireland Club XV!!!!

I'd rather see Marcus Horan at wing or fullback than Hurley.

Yeah, with good reason. I will never forget Munster vs Ulster at Thomond Park in January where his "butterfingers" handed Ulster two tries. How DK has put him in the Ireland squad with his shambolic performances is beyond me.

George Hook always said that there is a logic to every one of Declan Kidney's selections. DK left his logic at home when he picked Hurley imo.

I may not sound like it but I do feel sorry for the lad. Although tbh I feel more sympathy for guys like Carr who don't get in at all. :(

Not a bad idea, sure didn't Horan score two tries on the "wing" against Clermont Auvergne?? :D:D
